Arbetsbeskrivning
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The research activities reach from DNA-research and biomaterials to high temperature corrosion, catalysis and recycling. The Department is also heavily committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level in these areas.
Health, natural resources, sustainable energy and materials are some of our lead words and our vision is “Through curiosity and knowledge towards a sustainable world”.
We have approximately 300 employees, divided into four research and one administrative division. We are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg.
Information about the division and the research area
The research at the division of Energy & Materials at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is focused on material challenges in connection to green energy. We host the High Temperature Corrosion centre, a Swedish competence centre jointly sponsored by the Swedish Energy Agency, Chalmers University of Technology and 22 member companies.
High-temperature corrosion (HTC) is important in energy production, in engines and in industrial processes. It limits the life of installations, restricts the utilisation of the fuel and obstructs the development of more economical, environmentally sustainable processes and systems. Our research has several application areas, including combustion and gasification of biomass and waste, metallic materials for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and materials for industrial processes.
The research performed within the HTC framework links well-controlled laboratory exposures, ab initio calculations and thermodynamic calculations with advanced microstructural investigations. We work with state- of-the-art analytical electron and ion microscopy at the Chalmers Material Analysis Laboratory (http://www.chalmers.se/en/researchinfrastructure/CMAL/Pages/default.aspx), e.g. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) using high-resolution FEG-SEMs equipped with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) detectors. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling can be employed to analyze the specimens in more detail. The state-of-the-art FEI Titan 80-300 TEM provides unique opportunities for analyzing the oxide scales on the atomic level. CMALs analysis capabilities will increase with three new microscopes, i.e. an Cs corrected TEM, a SEM and a FIB/SEM, to be delivered within the next 6-12 month.
Major responsibilities
We are looking for a Postdoc to join our team. The majority of your working time will be devoted to own research studies, with much collaboration with academic and industrial partners. Your research will focus on state-of-the-art analytical work using electron microscopy.
All projects are performed in collaboration with our partner companies, other departments at Chalmers as well as research groups at other universities. This requires a combination of highly developed collaboration skills, own drive and high analytical capabilities.
You will communicate scientific results both orally and in writing at scientific conferences and in project meetings with industry partners.
Position summary
Chalmers offers a competitive and international research environment in the heart of Scandinavia. Here you find a friendly work environment with all the benefits of a Swedish university. We offer an employment with a competitive salary including benefits like financed and paid vacation (~28 days of vacation depending on age), parental leave, health insurance etc. The position will be limited to 1 year but with a possible continuation of an additional year, after evaluation of the first year.
Qualifications
You have a PhD related to ion and electron microscopy techniques and are expereinced user of TEM.
As a person, you show curiosity and deliver as part of a team, yet always take responsibility for your tasks. We believe you are innovative and structured, and enjoy being part of a dynamic team.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
