Postdoctoral position in hydrogen aircraft propulsion

Postdoctoral position in hydrogen aircraft propulsion

Arbetsbeskrivning

Many ship operation related energy efficiency measures (EEMs) have been developed in the maritime community, but the benefits of those EEMs have not been fully realized in today’s shipping market. Partly due to large uncertainties in a ship’s energy performance models, which are the key components for all the operation related EEMs. As the fast digitalization in shipping, large amounts of ship operation data are being collected, and can be exploited to significantly improve a ship’s performance models and the Energy Efficiency Measures. This PhD position will give you opportunities to develop machine learning/AI model to improve ship performance models and increase accuracy of measured/collected metocean environments encountered by ships, which could be used to improve various energy efficiency measures.

Information about the research project
This PhD position is funded by VINNOVA through the project "AI enhanced EEMs to reduce shipping emissions". This PhD position and project will contribute to new knowledge and machine learning/AI algorithms development for various complexity of ship performancem models and their exploitation of ship energy efficiency measures, i.e., the AI-enhanced ship operation EEMs. These EEMs will also been disseminated to other shipping companies (to be tested on their ships) within the project consortium. This PhD position will work closely with other PhD students and PostDocs in the research group, as well as requires close cooperation with shipping companies, classification societies and the global maritime community. Therefore, good collabroative and communicative skills will be essential. We also expect that you have an interest to further develop your competence in regards to project management and the various forms of communication needed (orally and in writing, in meetings, at conferences, between project participants and to stakeholders).

Information about the Division of Marine Technology
This PhD position will be a part of the division of Marine Technology. The division carries out fundamental and applied research for enabling the development and improvement of marine technology. The division's research are divided into four main areas: marine structures, hydrodynamics, safety and reliability, and maritime operations. All research activities are best presented through our core competences: renewable energy, energy efficiency, structural integrity, hydrodynamics, ship design, safety and reliability, propulsion systems, wave dynamics, and numerical methods.

Major responsibilities
Within the project, the applicant is expected to develop various ship operational performance models to describe a ship's power consumption in terms of various ship operational and environmental conditions by difference levels of machine learning/AI methods, and implement them in shipping companies' energy efficiency measures to assist ship operations and decision making. In addition, your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies, which include work in the research project but also to take doctoral courses. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing; working language is English. The position generally also includes teaching, primarily in the international master programme in Naval Architecture and Ocean Enigneering or performing other duties corresponding to maximum 15 percent of working hours.

Contract terms
The position is a full-time temporary employment with a time limited to a maximum of 4.5 years. You will be employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position as a PhD student, you need a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in naval architecture, ocean engineering, transport and logistic engineering or navigation control engineering with emphasis on ship navigation and communication methods. The position requires oral and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not required, but you will be encouraged to learn Swedish during employment.

You are expected to take initiatives, work independently when needed and to take responsibility for your work. Further, the project interacts closely with adjacent disciplines and industry. Thus you need to have strong collaborative skills. Finally, you need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large. Experiences from control and optimization methods, big data analysis and machine learning methods, and programming language such as Python, Matlab.
