Information about the research and the division
The Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology at Chalmers University of Technology is one of the world leading research environments in systems and synthetic biology. Our research interests involve a wide range of activities from understanding the fundamental operational principles of metabolism and studies of metabolic diseases, to highly applied research directed towards development of new cell factories used among others as tools for next generation drug discovery and production platforms. Recently, Ross King was recruited to the division to set up next generation autonomous laboratory systems, robot scientists, that apply artificial intelligence, AI, to automate the discovery of scientific knowledge through cycles of hypotheses generation and experimentation. When complete "Genesis", a 3rd generation robot scientist, will have 10,000 micro-chemostats where AI designed hypothesis-led experiments will be executed. With "Genesis" we aim to transform how science is done. Already up and running at Chalmers is "Eve", a robot scientist designed to automate early-stage drug design in neglected tropical diseases.
The King group is now recruiting a postdoc/researcher to help develop and run "Genesis", where we will employ the yeast S. cerevisiae and the unique experimental tools available with this organism, to demonstrate how systems biology research can be moved to a new level. You will play a key role in running and maintaining the existing Robot Scientist "Eve" and in building, running and maintaining "Genesis".
-The details of the departmental research activities may be found here.
Major responsibilities
In this position you will be responsible for executing and planning yeast transcriptomic experiments. Further, you will be running and maintaining the Robot Scientist "Eve" in collaboration with other team members as well as other groups that collaborate with the King Lab; this includes designing and executing cycles of experimentations and data/knowledge generation, data analysis in collaboration with bioinformaticians, drafting of lab reports (publications) and more.
You will also develop, run and maintain the Robot Scientist "Genesis" in a similar fashion as with "Eve" above. This work requires a high degree of intellectual involvement and scientific creativity for making maximal use of the opportunities that yeast offers as an experimental organism combined with the unique high throughput experimentation possible with "Genesis".
As the research group of Ross King grows, you will participate in guiding a growing number of younger scientists at the level of master or PhD candidates.
For all postdocs and researchers at Chalmers
Your major responsibility as postdoc/researchers is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc or researcher, you must have a doctoral degree in molecular biology/biotechnology, ideally with experience from laboratory automation. You should have experience in working with yeast as an experimental organism, documented among others by a strong publication record.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
