Information about the research and the division
The research at the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory (QDP) extends over a variety of different topics. QDP is therefore divided in to 3 sub groups: Experimental Mesoscopic Physics, Quantum Devices & Oxide Electronics and Bolometer Sensors. The Quantum Devices & Oxide Electronics group has its origin in superconductivity and superconducting electronics and has moved towards oxide based materials, such as ceramic superconductors, ferroelectric and manganite materials. Present activities include basic thin film growth and material studies to form the basic building blocks both for fundamental investigations as well as for devices with quantum limited sensitivity and operation up to terahertz frequencies.
Major responsibilities
We are seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position in experimental physics. The research will deal with the realization and characterization of nanostructures made of the High critical Temperature Superconductor (HTS) YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO). In detail, the project aims at a deeper understanding of the nanoscale charge order, competing with superconductivity, which has been recently discovered by X-ray scattering in all cuprates superconductor families, both electron and hole doped. To understand the microscopic mechanism behind the formation of these modulations of charge, we will use YBCO nanostructures (wires, superconducting quantum interference devices, nanorings), at different oxygen doping, spanning from the slightly overdoped to the strongly underdoped sides of the phase diagram, including the 1/8 underdoped region, where the charge order is expected to be the strongest. The investigation of the transport properties of these structures will provide detailed information about the evolution of the charge order with the dimensionality of the system. The outcome of the experiment could help to elucidate the connection between this local order and the superconducting phenomenon, possibly leading to a better understanding of the microscopic mechanisms responsible for HTS.
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of one year.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have a PhD in Physics or Engineering; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. Documented experience in thin film technology and lithography is a requirement. Documented experience in nanoelectronics research and cryogenics is considered a strong merit.
