Postdoctoral position in Microgrids and smart energy buildings

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Department of Energy and Environment excels in research and education related to energy, environment and sustainable development ranging from a global perspective to industrial, building and product issues. The focus is on experimental and theoretical research on energy technology as well as on development, use and evaluation of methods and tools for analysis of technical systems. In total around 200 persons are active at the four divisions of the department.

Information about the division
The Division of Electric Power Engineering conducts research within a broad range of topics in electric power technology. Our purpose is to develop interdisciplinary research areas within the university as well as with external partners. Research activities at the division can be organised in three main areas: electric power systems, power electronics, and electric machines. The strength of our research is based on a solid theoretical basis and extensive experimental verification in our laboratories as well as in the field. Our goals are to enhance the knowledge base regarding electrical systems for renewables, vehicles, buildings and industrial applications. The division has recently been involved in a number of research projects in the area of smart energy buildings and microgrids funded by EU, state funding as well as by Swedish power industry.

-The details of the departmental research activities may be found at http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/ee/Pages/default.aspx.

Major responsibilities
This project will develop a platform for the energy management system for smart energy buildings with own renewable energy based production and energy storage devices. The project aims at developing methods for improving the efficiency of energy uses in buildings, reducing total energy demands in buildings without compromising the level of comforts of customers. The project also aims at improving the operation of distribution networks with smart energy buildings, increasing renewable energy hosting capacity, as well as reducing the needs for distribution grid investment.

This position will include research activities mainly in a project funded by Göteborg Energy AB (GEAB) within the collaboration program between Chalmers University of Technology and GEAB. The postdoc will cooperate in research activities with other parallel research projects in the area of microgrids at Chalmers and will also be expected to participate in teaching activities at the division.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
The applicant for the position should have a PhD degree in electrical engineering with focus on power systems and have strong background and research experience in microgrids design, operation and control. A strong knowledge of mathematical modeling and optimization algorithms is expected. Good understanding of data analysis, measurement and communication technologies is a plus. Applicants are expected to have an excellent knowledge of both written and spoken English. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.

The PhD degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
