At the Department of Signals and Systems, we conduct internationally renowned research in biomedical engineering, antenna systems, signal processing, image analysis, automatic control, automation, mechatronics, and communication systems. We offer a dynamic and international research environment with about 150 employees from more than 20 countries, and with extensive national and international research collaborations with academia, industry and society. The department provides more than 70 courses, of which most are included in the Master’s Programs ”Biomedical Engineering”, ”Systems, Control and Mechatronics”, and ”Communication Engineering”.

Information about the research/the project/the division
We invite applications for one postdoctoral position on optimal control of automated vehicles and vehicular powertrain in particular. The candidate will join a team of postdocs and PhD students engaged in similar research. At the Mechatronics group of the Signals and Systems Department, we are engaged in both fundamental and applied research related to intelligent and sustainable transportation systems. Ongoing research projects focus on the design and the experimental validation of control algorithms for energy managmeent of vehicular powertrains and automated driving. Our research is, where possible, validated through experiments on full-scale vehicles and in collaboration with research groups, insitutes and industry.
In order to meet the strict legislations on fuel consumption and emissions in road transportation, vehicle manufacturers introduce a combination of techniques, such as electrified powertrains, upgraded and improved kinetic energy recovery, waste heat recovery, and exhaust after treatment systems. This in turn has consequences on the development of the control systems which tend to become unmanageable when the powertrain systems are evolving with time. A new control system design methodology is needed to address this challenge. The research challenge in this project is to develop such a methodology, which speeds up development time, provides the flexibility to handle product variations, reduces calibration efforts, and provides opportunities to further increase energy efficiency. Of particular interest is modularity, use of look-ahead information, and predictive and optimal control.
Major responsibilities
The working time of post-doctoral staff is mainly devoted to research. Undergraduate teaching duties, not exceeding 20% of the working time, may include supervision of MSc students. The appointment is a full-time employment (not a scholarship) for a period of not more than two years.
The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
Qualifications
A PhD (or close to completion) in control theory, applied math or neighboring relevant field. Experience with modeling and control of vehicular powertrains, and in particular waste heat recover and after treatment system, is desired. The doctoral degree should generally not be older than three years.
