Postdoctoral position in Physics

Arbetsbeskrivning

LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics. www.fysik.lu.se/english.

Specific subject description
The research project concerns development of new as well as advancement of existing laser-diagnostic measurement concepts using ultrashort (femtosecond/picosecond) laser pulses.

Although of fundamental character, the development should have a focus on applications in combustion, plasma, catalysis, gasification/pyrolysis, and diagnostics of nanostructure production. A number of existing laser-spectroscopic methods, non-linear (coherent) techniques in particular, might be significantly advanced by using fs/ps laser pulses. Measurement situations for which only a single window or inspection hole is provided are common in many of the aforementioned applications. Therefore new, so-called single-ended, techniques will be explored, specifically concepts based on backward air lasing and filamentation.

Job specification
Major duties:

- Perform research in which novel measurement concepts based on ultrashort laser pulses are developed with a strong focus on the aforementioned application areas.
- Function as an independent researcher with a high level of attention to detail.
- Analaze and interpret experimental data, and compare with model predictions.
- Communicate research results through publication in scientific peer-reviewed journals and contributions at scientific conferences.

Eligibility requirements
Qualified for the position as postdoctoral fellow is a person who holds a doctorate or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctorate and who has completed the degree within the three years prior to the last date for applications, unless there are valid reasons.

Special requirements for this position:

- A PhD in physics, chemistry or related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of experimental spectroscopy/diagnostics using femtosecond lasers.
- Deomstrated ability to perform independent research, create innovative solutions to address scientific and technical problems.
- Recent record of peer-reviewed scientific publications.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
- Very good knowledge in written and spoken English.

Assessment criteria
For appointments to postdoctoral fellow, good ability to develop and carry out independent research forms the assessment criteria.

Desirable qualifications:

- Experience from laser/optical diagnostics
- Experimental experience from non-linear optical techniques
- Experience from theoretical modelling of laser-induced phenomena, particlarly from femtosecond lasers
- Experience from combustion diagnostics
- Experience from multi-disciplinary collaborations
- Programming skills

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant through his/her personality, experience and competence is assessed to complement and strengthen the ongoing research at the Division of Combustion Physics.

Application instructions
Applications must contain a cover letter, in which applicants describe themselves and their particular research interests. Applications must also include a CV, a summary of the applicant’s PhD thesis, contact details of at least two references, and any other documents that the applicant wishes to refer to.

Lunds universitet välkomnar sökande med olika bakgrund och erfarenheter. Vi ser jämställdhet och mångfald som en styrka och tillgång.
