Postdoctoral position in Trace Gas Fluxes

Arbetsbeskrivning

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Forest Ecology and Management, Umeå Postdoctoral Position in Trace Gas Fluxes in Boreal Peatlands www.slu.se The Department of Forest Ecology and Management (www.seksko.se) conducts research and education in both basic and applied science in the areas of Vegetation Ecology, Soil Science and Forest Management. The major research focus is on the boreal forest landscape, including peatlands and surface waters, but we have activities also in other biomes. The current position is in Soil Science/Biogeochemistry.In a recent evaluation (2009) of the university the Soil Science/Soil Biogeochemistry group was ranked among the top seven out of a total of 130 groups at the university. The department has about 90 members of staff of which 14 are professors.Research areas include plant-soil interactions, surface water hydrogeochemistry, soil chemistry, soil biology, biosphere-atmosphere exchange, forest history, forest management, forest regeneration, plant population and community ecology. The department has modern technical facilities, close collaboration with several state-of-the-art technical platforms at Umeå University, and access to unique long-term forest ecosystem experiments and other field sites. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with focus on: Exchange of carbon (CO2, CH4 and DOC), energy and water between the mire and the atmosphere and hydrosphere (Ref.no:572/10). This position requires skills and experience from micrometeorology and Eddy-Covariance measurements. The core activity of this position will be to interpret, analyze, synthesize, and write up papers from existing data resulting from eddy covariance (carbon, water and energy exchange, etc.), chamber (CH4 & CO2), water runoff measurements (CO2, CH4 and DOC) e.t.c.Experience from manipulation and evaluation of large data sets are therefore essential, also knowledge of programming languages for data manipulation and statistical analyses is a merit. You will however also to some extent be involved in maintenance and measurements at the field site. The research within the scholarship will be based on available data and/or research infra structure at the boreal mire Degerö Stormyr. The mire has been intensively used for research on mire biogeochemistry since 1995, with focus on carbon biogeochemistry.Since 2001 we have continuous Eddy-Covariance data on the land-atmosphere exchange of CO2, water and energy.Since 2004 also methane emission and runoff C-export are monitored continuously to allow estimates of the full ecosystem carbon budget.A number of field manipulation experiments are also available at the site. Requirements: PhD awarded within the last 5 years in ecosystem ecology, environmental science, or related field such as atmospheric sciences, biogeochemistry or microbial ecology.Experience in one or more of the following areas: eddy covariance, ecosystem modeling, micrometeorology, biogeochemistry of trace gases, plant physiological ecology, and/or nutrient cycling is a merit.Effectively and efficiently write peer-reviewed papers, and communicate fluently in English are essential for the positions. The positions are two years scholarship available for persons with no previous employment at the SLU SLU is an equal opportunity employer. For a complete adv: personal.slu.se/job Submit your application, labelled with the reference number 572/10 no later than April 15, 2010 to "Registrator", SLU, Box 7070, SE-750 07 UPPSALA.
