Postdoctoral position in Train Aerodynamics

Arbetsbeskrivning

Applied Mechanics’ activities are characterized by academic excellence in an international environment and interaction with the society, industry and various types of networks. The Department is one of the leading environments within Vehicle and Mechanical Engineering research. The topics encompass both fundamental and applied research questions. Our goal is to deliver sustainable, technological soulutiones for society through applied mechanics.

Our research contributes among other things to more energy efficient and safer vehicles, better and more environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, modeling light weight materials, safer rail transports and sustainable energy supply.

The Department of Applied Mechanics offers a wide range of courses in the undergraduate programmes, in addition to two international Masters programmes in Automotive Engineering and Applied Mechanics. Courses are available within the three graduate schools: Machine and Vehicle Systems, Solid and Structural Mechanics and Thermo and Fluid Dynamic. In addition Applied Mechanics provides international continuation courses.

The department has approximately 190 employees.

This position is placed within the Division of Fluid Dynamics.

Major responsibilities
The project is about improvement of aerodynamic properties of trains using different techniques for flow control. Existing freight and regional trains will be studied with the aim to decrease their energy consumption. The potential candidate will work primarily with CFD simulations of flows around trains. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to take part in the experimental investigations which will be performed together with coworkers. Time-dependent CFD techniques such as LES, DES, PANS and URANS will be used in the numerical part of the project. These techniques have been used for a long time within our research group with great success and this project is continuation of a recently finished PhD project on such simulations within our group.A Post Doc position is an appointment that offers an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry.

The appointment is a scholarship for 1+1 years. Majority of your working time is devoted to your research. Included in your work may also be co-supervision of B.Sc. and M.Sc. thesis students.

The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
The applicant must have a PhD degree in Computational Fluid Dynamics from a non-Swedish university. The PhD degree of the applicant should not be older than 2 years. Experience in time-dependent simulations such as LES or DES and flow control techniques is an advantage. Strong writing and oral skills in English are required. We are looking for a candidate that can work independently and take initiative. She/he should be able to communicate his results with the rest of the group and our students. The ability of the candidate to work in a team is important as the project will require close collaboration with colleges performing both numerical simulations and experiments.

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
