Arbetsbeskrivning
Applications are invited for postdoctoral positions in extragalactic and Galactic astronomy at the Department of Space, Earth and Environment (SEE), Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
Information about the research
For the position in extragalactic astronomy you will join the research group of Professor Kirsten K Knudsen. The research of the postdoc position is on galaxy evolution with focus on developing a framework for modelling and interpreting the results obtained from observational studies with mm-wave/radio instruments such as ALMA, JVLA, APEX, and IRAM. Specifically, the projects will focus on gas excitation and kinematics in high-redshift galaxies. Depending on qualifications, the candidate can also be involved in the observational aspects.
For the position in Galactic astronomy you will join the research group of Professor Jonathan Tan. The research is on theoretical modeling of star cluster formation using coupled N-body and hydrodynamics numerical methods.
Major responsibilities
Postdoc position in extragalactic astronomy:
Your responsibility as postdoc is to perform research in the group of Kirsten Knudsen. The postdoc position will focus on developing a framework for modelling and interpretation of observational results for high-redshift galaxies, in particular for starbursts and AGN host galaxies, as well as modelling that can be used for developing the future observational projects.
Postdoc position in Galactic astronomy:
Your responsibility as postdoc is to perform research in the group of Jonathan Tan. The postdoc position will involve developing theoretical models of star cluster formation, including predictions for observational tests of these models.
The positions also include some possibility for involvement in supervising master's and/or PhD students. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The positions are meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Position summary
Both positions are full-time temporary employment.
The position in extragalactic astronomy is normally limited to two years, but might be extended with a third year depending on performance and availability of funding. Starting date early 2021, though exact date is flexible.
The position in galactic astronomy is limited to one year. Start date from Sept. 2020.
Qualifications
You should have a PhD, preferably in astronomy, by the start of the appointment. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If you do not speak Swedish, we strongly encourage you to learn and Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Postdoc position in extragalactic astronomy:
A successful candidate should demonstrate potential for research in extragalactic astronomy and the topic of galaxy formation and evolution. Experience with analysis or modelling or gas excitation properties is a clear asset. Knowledge of gas kinematics and astrochemistry is an asset. Experience or interest in mm/submm/radio interferometry would be an asset.
Postdoc position in Galactic astronomy:
A successful candidate should demonstrate potential for research in star cluster formation studies. Prior experience in numerical methods applied to star cluster formation is a clear asset.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
