Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Arbetsbeskrivning

The European Spallation Source, ESS, a partnership of European countries, is hiring motivated and inspired people to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek ambitious, talented people in different fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe.

ESS can offer a variety of things, such as passionate and international colleagues, a vibrant melting pot of diversity, and a challenging, exciting and high paced work environment. We value and need expertise, innovative minds and great ways of leading and interacting with people from all over the world.

Come and change the world with us!

ESS is now looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on the development of the future upgrade of the facility in the context of the HighNESS project. The ESS construction phase will end in 2025 with the delivery of fifteen top-class instruments for condensed matter research. ESS has however been designed with an eye for future upgrades of the facility, and that’s where the HighNESS proposal enters in the game with the development of the second ESS source.

The postdoc will be part of the Spallation Physics Group in the Target Division of ESS, which is responsible for designing and building the neutron source.

Job description

The tasks of the postdoc will be to work on the neutronic design and development of simulation software related to the neutron sources foreseen by the HighNESS project. This includes both a liquid deuterium moderator for cold neutrons and very cold and ultra cold neutron converters. The development of the simulation software will be carried out through the integration/extension of the freely available software package NCrystal with a popular Monte-Carlo code, such as MCNP and PHITS, and to include effects relevant to the simulation of neutron transport through materials of interest to the project, such as diamond nanoparticles, magnesium hydride, intercalated graphite, and the clathrate hydrides. The post doc will then use the developed software, as well as existing neutron libraries, to work toward a detailed neutronic design of the novel neutron sources in the ESS Target station, including engineering details.

Qualifications

Must have:

• PhD. in nuclear physics, particle physics or related field
• Experience with scientific programming using C++ or Fortran
• Experience with Monte-Carlo codes such as MCNP, Geant4, OpenMC, and PHITS

Nice to have:

• Knowledge and experience in low-energy neutron physics or related topics
• Experience with nuclear data libraries (NJOY, ENDF)
• Experience with neutron scattering modelling (McStas, VITESS)
