The School of Medical Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in medicine for a fixed-term appointment. This position is within Nutrition-Gut-Brain Interactions Research Centre (http://www.oru.se/ngbi). NGBI is a multidisciplinary research- and innovation centre, aiming to gain unique competence on nutrition-microbe-gut-brain interactions, with a specific focus at common intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and decreased gut function associated with ageing. The research activities for this position focuses on investigating the influence of microbial products on the human gastrointestinal tract and mechanisms involved in these interactions.

Duties and responsibilities
Duties include conducting a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader. The successful candidate will play an important role in researching the health properties of microbial products, with a particular focus on butyrate. He/she will help to determine the role of butyrate in colon health and host signalling. He/she will also identify food products that promote the production of butyrate.

The successful candidate will interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day-to-day research in conjunction with an academic researcher. He/she will also contribute to research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of the research project.

Eligibility
Eligible for the appointment as postdoctoral researcher are applicants holding a doctoral degree in medicine (Microbiology/Molecular Biology desirable). The doctoral degree should have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree prior to that may however also be considered if special grounds exist (leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical duties, an elected position in a trade union, or other similar circumstances).

Assessment criteria
The ideal candidate will have 1) laboratory experience in the area of microbiology, 2) documented competence in gut microbiome and microbial metabolites research, 3) competence and experience in feacal fermentation procedures, and 4) technical expertise in Gas Chromatography analysis and method development.

The successful candidate has good communication-, organization- and interpersonal skills. He/she has an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
