Postdoctoral researcher in biology with focus on environmental toxicology

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in biology for a fixed-term position at the School of Science and Technology / Unit for Natural Science.

Subject area
The subject area for this position is biology, with specialization in Environmental Toxicology.

Background
The Man-Technology-Environment (MTM) Research Centre focuses on toxicant screening, as well as discovery and hazard assessment of toxic chemicals using molecular toxicology, epidemiology, and analytical chemistry together with industry, government, and academia. The research areas are metabolomics (exposome-disease studies), mixture-, epigenetic- and particle toxicology, applied environmental chemistry, and occupational health. MTM has in the last years built a solid research environment with state-of-the-art modern infrastructure for projects in analytical chemistry and toxicology using effect-based methods, effect-directed analysis (EDA) and high-performance separation methods.

We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our multidisciplinary team of around 50 researchers on different academic levels and work in the new European research program Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC). The projects within PARC concern development and application of an Early Warning System for discovery and hazard assessment of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs). The overall focus of the project is developing, adapting and applying effect-based methods and effect-directed analysis for a broad characterization and hazard assessment of CECs in wastewater, sediment, soil, sentinel species and other matrices.

Duties and responsibilities
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills.

The successful candidate will mainly work with development, adaptation and application of a battery of cell-based bioassays for effect-based detection of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), genotoxicants, and chemicals with new mechanisms of action of toxicity (MoA). In line with this, the candidate will take part in development and application of new approach in vitro methods (NAM) for toxicity assessment based on high content screening for phenotypical cellular pertubations as a tool for toxicant discovery and elucidation of MoAs. The work will also involve development, adaptation and application of high performance- and high throughput effect directed analysis (EDA). This will be done in close collaboration with environmental analytical chemists focusing on non-target and suspect screening and with bioinformatics and machine learning experts. The duties also involve taking active part in coordinating the experimental work in the bioassay and EDA labs.
