Arbetsbeskrivning
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in biomedicine for a two-year fixed-term position at the School of Medical Sciences.
Subject area
The subject area for this position is cardiovascular biology / immunology.
Background
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death world-wide, accounting for approximately one third of all deaths globally. Atherosclerosis is the underlying process for most CVDs and is characterized by accumulation of cholesterol and activated immune cells in the arterial wall. The clinical presentations of atherosclerosis are diverse and comprise myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral arterial disease etc. Vascular inflammation is a crucial component in the development of CVD and is currently evaluated as therapeutic target for cardiovascular disease.
In the current project the importance of the melanocortin system in the development of cardiovascular disease will be evaluated, and novel drug candidates that act on the melanocortin receptors will be tested for their ability to reduce vascular inflammation, and thereby decrease the risk for cardiovascular events.
The position is part of a strong research environment, Cardiovascular research centre (CVRC) at Örebro University (https://www.oru.se/english/research/research-environments/mh/cardiovascular-research-centre-cvrc/). The main aims of the research environment are to significantly strengthen the cardiovascular research through genuine translational research and collaboration between basic and clinical scientists at Örebro University and Örebro University Hospital, and to create unique multidisciplinary projects in the field of cardiovascular research.
Örebro University is one of the fastest growing university in Sweden with 17000 students and 1500 employees. In year 2020, Örebro University was ranked among top 75 of the young universities according to the Times Higher Education, and top 30 when considering citation rate per se. Örebro University is a government university, which entitles to several benefits such as extended holiday and generous occupational pension and health insurance. Employees also receives health and wellness coupons. https://www.oru.se/english/working-at-orebro-university/why-work-at-orebro-university/
Duties and responsibilities
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills.
In the current position the post-doctoral fellow will study melanocortin receptor agonist and their impact in vascular cells and immunes cells and evaluate how novel melanocortin receptor agonists affect atherosclerosis development and progression. The applicant will work with cultured cells and ex vivo with human and mice blood and tissues and study cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying development of cardiovascular disease.
The researcher is expected to work independently, to take responsibility of the execution, organization, and development of the research project, to generate and document experimental results, and to report project progresses to the team leader regularly. The researcher should be experienced in scientific communication and are expected to supervise junior members of the group. This study will be conducted in close collaboration with two Swedish companies in the life science sector, as well as in collaboration with other members of the Cardiovascular Research Centre.
