Arbetsbeskrivning
The School of Science and Technology is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in Chemistry or Biology, with focus on the chemical and toxicological interactions of organic chemicals and environmentally relevant elements for a fixed-term appointment.
Background
We seek a postdoctoral researcher within the field of chemical and toxicological interactions (mixture toxicity) of selected environmental relevant elements and persistent organic pollutants. The work will be carried out within an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Swedish Knowledge Foundation in close collaboration with industrial partners and authorities. The project combines environmental chemistry, geochemical modelling, mixture toxicity, remediation, and ecotoxicology to answer key questions on the interactions between selected contaminants, under changing environmental conditions and the resulting toxicological effects.
The research is conducted at Man-Technology-Environment (MTM) Research Centre and aims at characterizing the ecotoxicological effects and chemical interactions of environmental pollutants in different waters representing different test conditions. MTM is a multidisciplinary research environment in which chemistry, biology and medicine are merged to solve environmental and health challenges. For this research project the understanding of chemical and biological processes and interactions requires the usage of our analytical tools in chemistry (ICP-MS, ICP-MS3, SEM-EDS, IC, GC-MS, LC-MS) and of the most prominent model species in aquatic toxicology, the zebrafish.
Subject area
The position will either be in the subjects of Biology or Chemistry, depending on the qualification of the candidates.
Duties and responsibilities
The position as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have been awarded their doctoral degree no later than five years ago, to consolidate and develop their research skills. The postdoctoral researcher will be in charge of the investigation a) of chemical interactions of selected elements and organic compounds, under different water conditions, and b) of specific toxic effects of such mixtures on zebrafish. The researcher will work mainly in the research project but will also take part of the technical and administrative day-to-day management. The appointment may also include teaching when there is a need within the organization. The share of teaching may not exceed 20 percent of a full-time position.
Eligibility
Eligible for the appointment as postdoctoral researcher are applicants holding a doctoral degree in biology or chemistry, or in related subject areas. The doctoral degree should have been awarded no more than five years prior to the application deadline. Candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree prior to that may however also be considered if special grounds exist (leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical duties, an elected position in a trade union, or other similar circumstances).
Assessment criteria
The researcher must have a strong background in the investigation of toxicological effects of environmental pollutants, and/or a strong background in analytical chemistry and the speciation of environmental relevant elements. Priority will be given to candidates that have experience in application of molecular and toxicological analyses in zebrafish and/or chemical speciation analysis. Knowledge in the study of cell morphology and on the phenotype of zebrafish embryos will be valued. Any experience in the investigation of behavioural changes in zebrafish is an advantage. As the position is associated to an international working environment, good oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory. General assessment criteria include good interpersonal skills and an ability to cooperate in an interdisciplinary environment and to be able to work in a team.
Information
The position is a fixed term position of one year (100%) with the possibility of applying for an additional year if funding is available. The salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
