Postdoctoral researcher in Computer Science

Postdoctoral researcher in Computer Science

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in Computer Science or a fixed-term position at the School of Science and Technology.

Subject area
The subject area for this position is Computer Science.

Background
The researcher will be based at Örebro University's Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS, http://www.oru.se/aass), which carries out multi-disciplinary research at the intersection of robotics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, computer science, and measurement technology. Our research in general is carried out in close partnership with world-leading corporations such as Volvo, Epiroc, Scania, LKAB and Bosch, as well as with the public sector. Our research on perception, planning and coordination systems for mobile robots is recognized world-wide.

The position is associated with a research project that aims to develop novel solutions for teams of robots working with and for humans. What we are looking for is a candidate that can investigate material handling capabilities with autonomous mobile machinery. This includes mainly how to autonomously load material and to classify material. Perception related problems such as finding out where to dig and where to dump material is also of interest. The same goes with local navigation strategies e.g., how to move between different loading and unloading locations efficiently.

The position provides the opportunity to work on exciting and practically relevant problems in close cooperation with leading industrial stakeholders, including Epiroc, Scania, and Volvo. The developed approaches will be relevant in several application domains, including mining and construction.

The successful candidate is required to have a solid theoretical background in one or more of the following topics:

• Machine learning and applications to robotics, including reinforcement learning and imitation learning for robot control
• Robot navigation and robot control
• Material handling (including material classification) with industrial vehicles as wheel loaders

We seek candidates with:

• significant track record in one or more of the fields above including publications in relevant conferences and journals
• proven ability to combine theoretical investigation and practical work with real applications
• strong expertise in system development, programming and use of current frameworks for robotics and machine learning, e.g., ROS, PyTorch, TensorFlow

Experience in the use of AI methods with real robot systems is a plus.

Duties and responsibilities
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills.

The successful candidate shall be engaged in both research and integration work and is expected to produce both scientific publications and project demonstrators.

The successful candidate will be required to work closely with our industrial partners, engaging in problem elicitation and demonstration activities, and testing, where appropriate and possible, in real production settings.

Qualifications
Those qualified for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher are applicants who have been awarded a doctoral degree in a subject matter relevant for the position or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. The degree is to have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline. If special grounds exist, a person who has been awarded their doctoral degree prior to that should also be considered. Such grounds comprise leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, positions of trust in a trade union or other similar circumstances.

It is not necessary to be familiar with the Swedish language, but proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory.

Assessment criteria
A basis for the assessment is the applicant’s ability to disseminate information and communicate; collaborate and engage with the wider community; and facilitate utilisation of the university’s research; as well as the ability and suitability to cooperate with other members of staff and contribute to the development of university operations.

Particular attention is to be paid to the applicant’s prospects of contributing to the future development of both research and education. Importance is also attached to a demonstrated ability and ambition to embark on a career within academia.

Other assessment criteria
Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken, is a requirement.
