Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Subatomic Physics

Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Subatomic Physics

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in experimental subatomic physics at Chalmers University of Technology, participating in a new experimental effort to investigate the role of nuclear fission in nucleosynthesis. This effort focuses on the r-process during neutron-star mergers. Experiments will be performed at the ISOLDE Solenoid Spectrometer (ISS) at CERN.

Information about the research
Experimental subatomic physics at Chalmers has a long successful scientific record, investigating light neutron-rich nuclei, as well as the evolution of nuclear structure at large-scale laboratories such as GSI/FAIR and CERN-ISOLDE. The research on the role of fission in neutron star mergers is financed by a grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation.

Major responsibilities
The work focuses on developing and performing radioactive beam experiments at CERN-ISOLDE with the ISS. Here detector development, simulations, as well as data analysis and interpretation are needed. You will, within an international team of collaborators, perform state-of-the-art experiments and take a key role in the planning of future experiments. You are expected to develop methods and software for detector read-out, signal processing and data acquisition. You will travel to international accelerator facilities, collaborating institutes and conferences. For experiments, the trips can last several weeks.

The position also includes teaching on undergraduate levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for this position you need to have a doctoral degree in Physics, preferably in experimental subatomic physics or equivalent. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. It is meritious if you have experience in programming, e.g. C or C++, and in data analysis. Experience with solenoid spectrometers is also beneficial. You should be able and motivated to work within an international collaboration.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
