Postdoctoral researcher in Theoretical Ecology

Arbetsbeskrivning

Duties

In this position the postdoc to work on theoretical aspects of ecological networks. In particular, this project will focus on the role of species and network characteristics for invasion success: What makes certain species successful invaders? And why can a species that is “held back” in its natural habitat be a severe invader in a different habitat? One possible explanation would be differences in the structure of the ecological network in the natural versus new habitat where the structure makes the species take a different position in the new habitat compared to the native. The likelihood of a successful invasion presumably also depends on which characteristics (traits) the species itself and its interactors possesses. In order to work with these questions the applicant will i) develop and use theoretical models and ii) analyze and evaluate the models using empirical data.

Within this framework the successful candidate is expected to develop new models, analyze and improve current ones, and investigate the basic ecological properties underlying invasion success in ecological communities (networks). The successful candidate will be part of a strong research group working in various areas of theoretical biology, using a diverse library of tools.

Qualifications

The applicant should hold a PhD in theoretical ecology/mathematics /statistics, or related areas. Experience from working on complex networks is qualifying. Excellent programming skills (for example R, Matlab, C, python) is highly desirable.
