Department of Biosystems and Technology
The Department of Biosystems and Technology is an interdisciplinary constellation with good opportunities for strong research collaboration within and outside the departmental area (https://www.slu.se/en/departments/ biosystems-technology). World-leading research combines detailed studies in biology and technology of production systems with systems analyses and cross-disciplinary syntheses. The Department has a broad competence in agricultural and horticultural crop science, bio-energy, technology, animal welfare, resource use efficiency, environmental impact and food safety.
At the Department, one group focusses on microbial horticulture (https://www.slu.se/en/departments/biosystems-technology/research/ microbial-horticulture/). With microorganisms in action, the research performed within the group addresses grand global challenges, i.e. food security and safety as well as biosecurity and biosafety, sustainability, water scarcity, land use as well as urbanization in a horticultural perspective.
Duties:
The research describes sustainable food production in aquaponic systems and the use of artificial intelligent as an early warning system to detect biotic and abiotic stress in the system. The postdoc will be involved in a project that identifies on molecular and functional bases the nutrient disorders and occurrence of plant diseases in aquaponic system. To investigate the mechanism underlying such functional changes in the plants, experiments are to be performed in relation to different crops and cultivation conditions.
Qualifications:
The candidate must be a PhD junior researcher with a doctorate from an institution other than the host institution. Eligible to apply is the person who has completed a doctoral degree no more than three years before the end of the application period.
Candidates already working at the department in question cannot normally be approved.
Experience with common technology techniques and digitalization is a requirement. In addition, experience with molecular biology, microbiology, plant physiology and aquaculture is a significant asset. The candidate should be fluent in spoken and written English, and have excellent communication skills. The candidate must demonstrate a solid ability to work independently to advance our research. The candidate should furthermore enjoy working in a group environment and have interest in mentorship.
