Postdoctoral - UPSC on single-cell transcriptomics in aspen trees

Arbetsbeskrivning

Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology
The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology is part of Umeå Plant Science Centre. Our main activities are academic research in experimental plant biology, where the major aim is to understand all aspects of plants in relation to the environment in which they live.

Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is a research centre in Umeå, Sweden (www.upsc.se) where research of both basic and strategic importance is conducted. The research at UPSC is carried out on all organization levels of the plant with a common goal to understand the plant as a complex organism in dynamic interaction with its environment.

Duties:
The woody tissues of forest trees are formed in the meristematic tissues of the vascular cambium. The cambial cells divide periclinally to form phloem tissues outward in the stem and xylem tissues inward in the tree stem. We have previously conducted high-resolution transcriptomic analyses of the woody tissues of both aspen and spruce, which have resulted in identification of tissue-specific gene expression patterns and co-expression networks that are conserved between the two species (Sundell et al., Plant Cell 29: 1585-1604; Jokipii-Lukkari S et al., New Phytologist 216:482-494). These analyses were performed in tangential cryosections. In the current project, the goal is to increase the resolution of the transcriptomic analyses by isolating protoplasts from the cambial region of aspen trees, followed by single cell RNAsequencing.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a keen interest in transcriptomic analyses on a single-cell level. Successful candidates are expected to have a PhD degree, experience in cell and molecular biology, transcriptomic analyses and bioinformatics as well as a proven research track record. Experience in plant protoplast or cell culture techniques is a merit.

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.

The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
