The Department of Clinical Sciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for undergraduate and post-graduate education and research within anesthesiology, diagnostic imaging, veterinary nursing, veterinary epidemiology, comparative medicine, surgery, medicine, clinical pathology, reproductive biotechnology and domestic animal reproduction.

Clinical Sciences

The Department of Clinical Sciences, Section of Ruminant medicine at SLU, invites applications from PhD holders for a 2-year position as post-doc researcher.

Research within the section focuses e.g. on infectious diseases in cattle. We work in cattle herds and in laboratories, with mapping of the epidemiology, spread, immunology, disease mechanisms and persistence of pathogens, as well as with development and evaluation of vaccines and laboratory tests. The overall goal is to develop control methods, such as vaccines, treatments and evidence-based biosecurity measures.

The post-doc will focus on the development of strategies for treatments of pneumonia and E. coli mastitis in cattle. The work includes mapping of disease mechanisms and development of in vitro models of the udder, as well as work with existing models of the lung and pneumonia in calves, according to 3R.

Research is performed in collaboration with national and international partners, such as the National Veterinary Institute (SVA), Uppsala University, Uppsala University Hospital, French National Institute for Agrigultural Research and Environment and National Veterinary School of Toulouse.

Duties

The post-doc is expected to (1) perform research according to a research plan, (2) actively, and through his/her own initiatives, contribute to the research of the section within the field and (3) investigate the possibilities to apply for external research. The work may include supervision of students at all levels.

Qualifications

A PhD-degree that was acquired within five years before the application date is obligatory. It is required to have a background within medicine, veterinary medicine or immunology and to be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral English communication skills, including a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Experience in work with cell culture in vitro is needed.

Experience in immunological techniques, such as immunostaining, microscopy and flow cytometry, and with research within sepsis, lung or udder diseases is considered a merit. Personal qualities such as abilities to solve problems and perform independent as well as team work will be of importance for assessment of the successful candidate.
