Arbetsbeskrivning
at the Department of Zoology. Closing date: 30 April 2023.
The Department of Zoology at Stockholm University consists of five divisions: Ecology, Ethology, Functional Zoomorphology, Population Genetics, and Systematics & Evolution. The department accommodates 45–50 staff and a similar number of PhD students. The advertised postdoctoral position will be placed in the Division of Population Genetics.
Project description
We are looking for a postdoc to join our yeast evolution and genomics lab at Stockholm University, Sweden. The position (100% research) is for 2 years with the possibility for extension.
The applicant is encouraged to develop a project that harnesses the power of experimental evolution and genomics in the model system Saccharomyces, to address fundamental questions in evolutionary biology. Specific aims are to explore the genetic basis of adaptation to heat stress under relevant global warming scenarios, using long-term experimental evolution with eight yeast species from diverse ecological and geographic backgrounds, and functional validation of putative thermotolerance alleles.
Members of our lab are currently working on a range of topics including the effects of hybridization on rates and mechanisms of adaptation, the genetic basis of adaptation to environmental stress, epistasis, fitness landscapes, and speciation mechanisms. We use both experimental and theoretical approaches.
Relevant publication: doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msac242
Main responsibilities
The position involves research in evolutionary biology.
Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Applicants will have a strong interest in evolutionary processes, especially in mechanisms of adaptation, and be familiar with the principles of quantitative and population genetics. Ideally, the candidate has experience in molecular genetics, comparative genomics, and bioinformatics. Prior training in experimentation with Saccharomyces yeast, hypothesis-driven research and strong quantitative thinking are desirable. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, good communicators, and happy to work in an international team.
Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date June 2023 or as per agreement.
