The department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) forms part of the Faculty of Forest Sciences, has about 50 employees and is located in both Umeå and Uppsala. The department carries out high quality research and under- and postgraduate education on a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The major focus in Umeå lies on value chains in the bio-based industry, where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / processed, used and re-used cost-effectively for different purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, the focus lies on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano to macro levels and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.

 
Description:
You will mainly conduct research within the framework of collaborative projects between Luleå University of Technology, Umeå University, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The projects are mainly about environmentally sustainable value chains (raw material supply chains) where forest raw materials are processed into high-quality products (chemicals, biofuels, etc.). The value chains are analyzed from a broad system perspective. The projects include work with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and other system analysis tools. You will take part in the latest developments regarding the LCA methodology and be involved in developing the methodology regarding application to products from forestry. You will collaborate and be part of various research project groups in Sweden and Europe.

The licentiate is part of the forest faculty's research school and of Bio4Energy research platform. This means that from the start you will be part of a worldwide network of contacts in the area and participate in international activities. The position is located in Umeå at the Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (www.slu.se/sbt). At present, the department has 13 active doctoral students. The postgraduate education is conducted in the research areas forestry and technology, and the department is also responsible for an extensive part of the basic education within the forester's program. The licentiate program consists partly of courses, independent research, and communication of research results. There are good opportunities to extend the employment 2 years to go on to a doctorate.

Qualifications:
We believe that you have a basic education where knowledge in LCA and life cycle cost (LCC) has been included, preferably with a focus on raw material supply or planning. You also have experience of using LCA software, e.g. GaBi or SimaPro. Previous experience of scientific publishing, as well as international experience, is an advantage. The employment requires good knowledge of English in speech and writing. The person employed must be strongly motivated to work with research issues and is expected to work independently and with the supervisors to take the projects forward and function well within the research group. Personal qualities will play a significant role in the recruitment process.

A person meets the general entry requirements for third level education if he or she has completed a second level qualification (Master's degree) or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at secondary level.

Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement. Applicants who do not have a Swedish school-leaving certificate from an upper secondary school must have an internationally approved language test certificate corresponding to English 6 (TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge ESOL). Please note that a TOEFL-test need to be sent directly to SLU from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The institution code of SLU is 1185. This might take several weeks, so be sure to request that the TOEFL-test should be sent to SLU in good time.
