SEI HQ is looking for a candidate with the experience and drive to take our media outreach to the next level.

The goal of our media outreach is to bridge science, policy and practice to inform policy- and decision-making. By improving our media relations, we expect to significantly raise awareness of SEI’s work among our target audiences and key markets, and position SEI as a thought leader in environment and development research and policy.
The Press Officer leads and delivers this vision as part of SEI’s global communications department. The Press Officer will take charge of SEI’s media strategy, international media relations and media outreach in Europe/Sweden. The Press Officer will work closely with SEI’s regional centres (especially in Latin America, Africa and SE Asia) to improve their media relations and increase regional awareness and impact.
Key duties and responsibilities include
Creation and implementation of the SEI Media Strategy
Support management with advice on media interactions
Procurement of broad and current knowledge of SEI’s research and policy engagement areas and the main messages for each impact area described in the new SEI strategy for 2020-2024
Analysis of broad media trends and the performance of SEI’s media activities and media strategy goals, informing the organization and adjusting media relations and outreach accordingly
Develop media action plans together with the communications officers at Headquarters and at the different centres
Support communication colleagues with advice and guidance on media outreach (e.g. how, where and when to make pitches, identifying the story or news angle)
Build and maintain media relations in the prioritized geographical areas according to the SEI Media Strategy
Plan and deliver media training for colleagues, including interview coaching, media training, press release writing tips
Respond to media enquiries
Proactively identify media engagement opportunities and work with colleagues to realize these (e.g. supply the relevant expert for comment, writing a press release or media advisory)
Writing and pitching opinion articles
Social media posting, media event planning and promotion
Responsible for procuring and managing media contact lists and systems
Responsible for procuring, managing and regular reporting of media monitoring
Communication of media coverage on sei.org and to SEI employees

This is a full-time permanent position with placement at SEI Headquarters in Stockholm. Some international travel is expected. The start date is mid-August or by arrangement, with a six-month probation period.
Who you are
We are looking for a candidate with the experience and drive to take our media outreach to the next level. We expect you to have a degree in media and communication, journalism or something closely related. In order to succeed and thrive in this position, you must have a least five years of experience as a Press Officer, Press Secretary, PR consultant or similar. Perhaps you have worked with public relations at a government agency or possibly in an international organization or business? We’d love to hear from candidates that have a background as a journalist, especially if you have worked internationally.
You will bring extensive international media contacts to SEI and look forward to building your network. You are fluent in English (native English skills considered a plus) with a professional level of proficiency in Swedish.
You are fast, flexible, and feel confident in your work. You are a skilled writer (primarily English but also Swedish) with the ability to transform scientific information into impactful and simple messages for optimal impact. You keep yourself informed and up-to-date by following media outlets daily and you are familiar with using various social media platforms (such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) You are strategic but also like to roll up your sleeves. Website posting, photo and video editing, and moderating events (in person or online) are things you feel comfortable doing.
Formal qualifications and knowledge
Degree in media and communication, journalism or something closely related
Minimum five years of experience as a Press Officer, Press Secretary, PR consultant or similar
Fluent in English (native English skills considered a plus) with a professional level of proficiency in Swedish
Familiar with using various social media platforms (such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)
Knowledge of website posting, photo and video editing, and moderating events (in person or online)
