In this PhD project, you will perform cutting-edge research on the joint design of power amplifiers with antennas for future satellite-based communication systems. This PhD project is among 15 research projects of the European Doctoral Network `ANTERRA' (Non-Terrestrial Antenna Systems for the six-generation wireless, 6G) that offers 15 fully funded industrial PhD student positions in the area of antennas, integrated circuits and signal processing, starting in the autumn of 2022. ANTERRA is focused on Antenna Systems for 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks. The consortium consists of 14 leading European R&D laboratories from universities, industries, and technology institutes in the domain of satellite communication and wireless infrastructure which are located in The Netherlands, France, Sweden, Italy and Belgium.
Project description
In the future 6G network, to guarantee coverage everywhere, deployment of a network of satellites is planned. Tracking the beam, however, will be important in order to create handovers, even for stationary users. This will require some degree of cooperation between different satellites. Frequency, phase and time synchronization will be necessary. Due to high speeds, the channel will occasionally be rapidly varying, and the Doppler effects are significantly larger that for conventional terrestrial-based networks. Here, we will develop techniques able to handle these harsh conditions. In particular, we intend to develop standalone synchronization solutions, not relying on external systems such as GNSS. As a starting point, we will study pilot-based solutions (frequency or time domain pilots), but also develop data-driven synchronization for more rapid updates.
The position is hosted by the communication systems group (CS), within the Department of Electrical Engineering. At CS, we conduct internationally renowned research in antenna systems, signal processing, and communication systems. Our research is performed in close collaboration with industrial partners and contributes to improved energy and spectrum efficiency, higher data capacity, improved reliability and accuracy in new and emerging wireless communication and sensor applications. We also collaborate closely with researchers both at the Antenna Systems and Microwave Electronics Laboratory. The PhD student will thereby have access to state-of-the art microwave-, antenna- and communication systems expertise, as well as world-class measurement infrastructure as needed to carry out this research project.
Major responsibiities
Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. Your research aims to result in scientific output at the international forefront while enjoying close collaboration with other PhD students and senior researchers in the team. To maximize the success of your PhD project, you will spend 18 months of your PhD project time as an employee at Ericsson AB (Gothenburg, Sweden) and visit other international partners. You will closely collaborate with other PhD students of the ANTERRA project. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to about 10-15% percent of working hours.
Qualifications
Applicants should have, or expect to receive, a Master of Science degree or equivalent corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in electrical engineering or applied physics discipline. In addition to the formal qualifications, selection is also based on the performance of the candidates in other works (e.g. thesis and advanced level courses), as well as through interviews and assignments. Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, motivation, ability to cooperate, initiative to work independently and personal suitability for research training. Previous experience in the area of signal processing and estimation theory as well as proficiency in using Matlab are meritorious.
For the PhD positions in ANTERRA project the EU `MOBILITY RULEs' apply. This means that candidate students cannot have resided for more than 12 months during the period of 3 years immediately before the start of the PhD, in Sweden.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 5 years.
