Professor in Clinical Genomics
Ref PAR 2021/825
Apply
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
At the Department of Laboratory Medicine, we study stem cell biology, neurobiology, glycobiology and cancer. We also study inflammatory, cardiovascular, hematological, and metabolic diseases as well as muscle diseases. The aim is to understand the mechanisms of the various diseases, and thereby develop more effective diagnostics and targeted treatment of patients. More information about the Department of Laboratory Medicine can be found on our website: https://www.gu.se/en/biomedicine
Subject area
Clinical Genomics
Subject area description
Clinical genomics includes clinically relevant studies of the genome, that is, an organism's full set of DNA, which includes both genes and non-coding DNA. The area is focused on developing, validating, and using genomic tests, e.g., transcription profiles, to confirm or rule out a human disease or to monitor a disease. An important part of this research area is the development of highly sensitive techniques for the diagnosis of human diseases in different body fluids and in small sample volumes, including in individual cells. The area is of great relevance for the implementation of precision medicine in clinical care.
Job assignments
The holder of the position is expected to conduct internationally competitive research in the field of clinical genomics and to develop novel highly sensitive, nucleic acid-based methods for the diagnosis of human diseases. The holder is also expected to attract external research funding from both Swedish and International funding bodies. The position includes teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Institute of Biomedicine has a large teaching assignment at the undergraduate level and participates in several different programs where teaching in different aspects of clinical genomics is an important part. It is therefore important that the applicant can actively strengthen this subject area by participating in our educational assignments in areas such as cell biology, pathology, and genetics. The holder is also expected to perform other tasks that are associated with a professorship, such as administrative tasks, internal and external commissions of trust, and to represent the subject area of clinical genomics nationally and internationally.
Eligibility
Demonstrated scientific and pedagogical skills. Eligibility for employment as a professor is stated in Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 4, Section 3 and the University of Gothenburg's own employment regulations.
Assessment
Assessment of the applications will be based primarily on scientific skills. When assessing scientific proficiency, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific contributions to the development of nucleic acid-based methods for clinical diagnostics and genomics, as well as the quality and originality of scientific research efforts, ability to plan and lead research and postgraduate education, and ability to communicate research results with the surrounding society. Documented ability to participate in research collaborations, and to collaborate with other disciplines and with organizations outside the university, e.g., the healthcare sector, are merits. A very strong merit is demonstrated success in attracting external funding in national and international competition, both individually and in major collaborative projects.
The second assessment basis is pedagogical merits and skills, and experience of teaching cell biology, pathology, and nucleic acid-based molecular techniques. When assessing the pedagogical skills, experience of planning, performing, and evaluating teaching, as well as of supervision and examination, will be evaluated. Documented experience of teaching in international environments is a strong merit. Administrative skills, experience of communication and collaboration with the surrounding society and ability to collaborate will also be considered. Courses in Teaching and Learning in Higher education is a qualification, and applicants who do not have such educational training is expected to undergo the training courses within one year of starting the employment.
Employment
The employment is a full time permanent post and is located at The Institute of Biomedicine, Department of Laboratory Medicine. First day of employment is by agreement.
Appointment procedure
Competence review of the applicant's documents after the closing date
Applicants' documents are sent to external experts for assessment
The recruitment will be dealt with in The Academic Appointments Board of Sahlgrenska Academy
