The Department of Animal Nutrition and Management

The Department of Animal Nutrition and Management (HUV) conducts basic and applied research on animal feeds, animal metabolism and animal housing and care. The goal is to create a sustainable and profitable production, with good animal care, that provides high-quality food. Our research concerns agricultural production animals as well as sports and companion animals. HUV is responsible for basic education, research and postgraduate education in the area of nutritional physiology, feed science, management issues and aquaculture. HUV offers an inspiring research environment where we study metabolic processes, nutrient utilization and management of animals in varying production systems.

Subject Area
The subject comprises nutritional physiology and metabolism of monogastric farm animals, dogs and cats, with links to environmental impact, sustainable food production, and animal health and welfare. The research goals are to improve the knowledge regarding interactions between nutrient supply, feeding and the animal's response at a molecular, cellular, organ and whole-animal level.

Duties
The candidate should, within the subject area


• develop and lead developing internationally competitive research
• develop and lead teaching at basic and advance level within the research area as well as related topics
• participate in PhD training and supervise PhD students
• apply for external research funding at both a national and international level
• collaborate with other researchers within SLU
• collaborate with researchers and other parties outside SLU
• advance and strengthen national and international networks within the research community, industry and society at large
• disseminate research findings and contribute with relevant knowledge to the society
• contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty and SLU
• carry out administrative tasks, including budget responsibility, within the department
• use Swedish as the working language within four years

Qualifications
The successful candidate shall


• have a PhD within animal science, veterinary medicine, biology or other area of relevance to the subject, and competence as associate professor (docent) or equivalent academic qualifications within the subject area
• have documented experience as main supervisor on doctoral level
• be a scholar of distinction within the subject area, specifically with respect to pigs
• have demonstrated a proven ability to lead and develop a successful research group
• have a proven ability to obtain external research funding in competition
• demonstrate teaching experience and have the ability to integrate research and scientific approaches into both teaching and other pedagogical work
• have a good ability to communicate in English

Assessment criteria
Assessment of the candidate’s suitability for employment as professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the scientific qualifications required for the position.

The assessment of research expertise will take the following into account:


• past and ongoing research
• ability to independently initiate and pursue innovative research
• ability to obtain external research funding in competition

The assessment of teaching expertise will take the following into account:


• planning, conducting and evaluating teaching and education, including examination of students
• supervision of doctoral students
• pedagogic vision
• training in teaching in higher education or equivalent knowledge

Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant’s expertise in:


• developing and managing activities and staff within the academy
• interacting with relevant stakeholders and society
• communicating research findings and development projects

Scientific competence also regarding dogs or cats is regarded as a merit.

When assessing the candidate’s qualifications, equal attention will be given to teaching and research expertise respectively.

The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to be most suitable to carry out and develop the above mentioned duties and to contribute to a positive development of the organization.
