Research environment
The Department of Biology and Environmental Science (BoM) belongs to the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Linnaeus University, and is based in the city of Kalmar, Sweden. As Kalmar is located on the shore of the Baltic Sea, much of the research at the Department has a focus on environmental issues related to marine ecosystems and environments at the boundary between sea and land including questions related to climate change. Ongoing research environments at BoM include geochemistry, environmental chemistry, marine microbiology, microorganism system biology, evolutionary ecology, palaeoecology, zoonotic ecology, environmental risk analysis and environmental technology.
Our intention with the recruitment of a professor in sustainability sciences is to strengthen and complement current research at the Department, and to contribute to the establishment of a research and education research platform in sustainability and resilience research that can be used to forge links with cognate subjects at BoM, the Faculty and university. Sustainable development is a strategic objective of Linnaeus University.
Job description
The successful candidate will have the task of establishing a competitive research program in sustainability science that complements and strengthens the current research in environmental subjects, to deliver high quality teaching at the bachelor, master and post-graduate levels, and to, when called upon, contribute to administrative tasks and to provide academic leadership.
Research for an expert in sustainability science with a broad expertize in the field of sustainability, i.e. from social sciences and economics to natural sciences. Research in sustainable ecosystem services and in resilience and on the adaptation of ecosystems and societies to climate and other environmental factors at local, regional and global scales will be of particular value for the position.
Requirements
The formal requirements for qualification as a professor are described in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (HF, chapter 4, section 3).
In accordance with the appointment procedures of the University, to be appointed as professor, a person must have demonstrated scientific skills that in terms of quality and quantity significantly exceeding that required of appointment as associate professor.
The appointee shall have a substantial track record of excellence in independent research that includes the planning and management of research and the successful supervision of post-doctoral, doctoral and MSc-level students. A proven ability to establish and maintain a research group of international standing through the attraction of competitive external research funding at national and international levels is essential.
The appointee shall have a documented track record of excellence in teaching and curriculum development at the first-, second- and third-cycle levels. This includes planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination.
Assessment grounds
Scientific and pedagogical quality: Particular emphasis shall be placed on the candidate’s documented scientific and pedagogic achievements when prioritizing amongst the eligible candidates. Scientific achievement shall be demonstrated through documented research activities from prior employment that include technical developments and innovations.
Upon assessment of the scientific merits, special emphasis shall be placed on the candidate’s capacity to contribute to the overall development of the field at the University, and to attract external funding in competition.
An equally detailed assessment of the candidate’s pedagogical merits shall focus on the quality and quantity of prior engagement in teaching and supervision. These pedagogical merits can have been acquired through employment at non-academic institutions, e.g. through supervision, internal teaching programs, mentoring, etc. Upon assessment of these merits, significant emphasis shall be placed on the candidate’s capacity for the development of teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels.
