The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science
The Department of Clinical Sciences
The Department of Clinical Sciences runs undergraduate and postgraduate education and research in anaesthesiology, clinical chemistry, comparative medicine, diagnostic imaging, epidemiology, medicine, reproduction, surgery and veterinary nursing. All subjects span all kinds of animals.
Subject area
Equine internal medicine concerns the diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment of diseases affecting equines. The topic covers various sub disciplines such as cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, clinical immunology, infectious diseases, nephrology, oncology, pulmonology, neonatal care and urology.
Duties
The position includes:
• developing and leading internationally competitive research within the subject
• developing, leading and participating in teaching of students at bachelor and master levels
• supervision of PhD students
• collaboration with research groups both within SLU and externally
• maintaining existing and developing new national and international networks and collaboration with researchers, industry and commerce as well as with society in general
• disseminating research findings and relevant knowledge to society
• actively seeking external research funding at national and international levels
• carrying out administrative tasks at departmental, faculty and university level.
The position also includes clinical work with equine internal medicine.
Qualifications
The applicant shall:
• be scientifically competent within the subject
• have a doctoral degree and the qualifications required to be appointed docent or equivalent
• be pedagogically skilled and have demonstrated the ability to integrate research and a scientific approach in teaching
• have documented experience as the main supervisor for doctoral studies throughout the doctoral period up to approved doctoral degree
• have demonstrated the ability to lead and develop a successful research team
• have demonstrated the ability to successfully compete for external research funding.
For the position, a veterinary qualification is required, which grants Swedish accreditation and international specialist status (diplomate) in the field of equine internal medicine.
Assessment criteria
The assessment for appointment of a professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the required competencies specified for the position.
The assessment of scientific competencies will take into account:
• past and ongoing research
• ability to independently initiate and conduct successful research
• ability to successfully compete for external funding
• documented scientific competence in the subject at a high international level.
The assessment of the pedagogic skills will take into account:
• experience of planning, conducting and assessing teaching
• supervision of doctoral students and students at the undergraduate and graduate level
• pedagogic vision
• courses in university teaching or equivalent followed.
Furthermore, the assessment will take into account the applicant’s degree of documented competence in:
• administrative work, developing and managing activities and staff within the university
• collaborating with society at large
• dissemination of information on research and development projects
• clinical work in equine internal medicine.
Equal weight shall be given to the assessment of pedagogical and clinical competencies, scientific competencies, and other assessed competencies.
