At the lnstitute of Neuroscience and Physiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy, extensive research and teaching is conducted on large areas of knowledge, from molecule to human. The institution consists of five sections; pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience and psychiatry and neurochemistry. The Department of Clinical Neuroscience conducts clinical research in the field of neuroscience focused on physiology and pathophysiology in various diseases of the nervous system and in muscles. Neurology is a dynamic and expansive area of knowledge, with clinical work that is linked to the highly specialized care provided within the neurology clinic at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The neurology research conducted at the unit has a strong clinical and translational profile. The research is focused on developing better diagnostic methods and treatment options for patients with different types of diseases of the bra in, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.

Subject area description
The research area of neurology includes diseases and injuries of the nervous system and is conducted in close collaboration with the neurology clinic. The research is focused on developing better diagnostic methods and treatment options for patients with diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Neurology is a dynamic and expansive area of research with both a clinical and a translational profile that is closely linked to highly specialized care.
Duties
Job assignments include conducting research, supervising PhD students and students working on their degree projects as well as stimulating staff in all categories to conduct research in neurology. It is expected that the holder of the position will build up a neurology research group, preferably with both a clinical and a translational profile. Further, the holder of this position is required to apply for externa I funding in order to contribute to a strong research environment within neurology research as well as develop research collaborations within the institution and externally, on both a national and an international level. Another important task is to support research colleagues to apply for and receive research grants.
The teaching assignment of the employment is extensive and the holder of the position is expected to be responsible for teaching neurology in both undergraduate and advanced levels in the medical program as well as teaching neuroanatomy and clinical neuroscience in other programs such as the speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy programs.
The holder is also expected to perform tasks that are normally associated with a professorship such as administrative tasks, internal and external positions of trust and to represent the subject of neurology both national ly and internationally.
The clinical work will be adapted to the needs of the institution and for the intended holder's competence and experience.
Eligibility
Eligibility criteria for employment as a professor are stated in chapter 4, section 3, of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
A joint employment may only be held by a person who meets the eligibility requirements for both employments according to the Swedish Higher Education Act (Chapter 3, Section 8).
Demonstrated scientific, pedagogical and clinical skills are requirements for the employment.
A medical degree, specialist competence in neurology and a doctoral degree (PhD) in a medical subject, or in another subject that the employer finds equivalent, are requirements.
The employment is combined with an employment as a neurology specialist physician at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU), and therefore, according to the National Board of Health and Welfare, it is necessary for the profession to have the necessary knowledge of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian to obtain a Swedish medical license.
