Department of Plant Biology
A position as professor in plant genetics is available at the Department of Plant Biology, at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala. SLU is located in the vibrant scientific community of Uppsala Sweden, which includes centers of excellence and world leaders in the field of molecular processes, genomics, biophysics, structural biology, evolutionary biology, ecology and plant biology. The department consists of 18 research groups and approximately 75 employees and is active within research areas focused on plant development, diversity and defense (www.slu.se/en/departments/plant-biology-forest-genetics). The department provides a strong supporting and collaborative environment and hosts numerous large-scale grants including from the European Research Council, Human Frontier Science Program, Wallenberg Foundation, Novo Nordisk foundation, Swedish Research Council and Formas.
The environment at the department encourages research collaborations both nationally and internationally. The department belongs to the Uppsala BioCenter (www.bioc.slu.se), an excellent scientific environment combining competence in plant biology, forest mycology and pathology, microbiology, food science, chemistry and biotechnology. It also offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, including modern plant growth facilities as well as equipment for bioimaging and molecular biology. The Uppsala region is also host to a SciLifeLab node (www.scilifelab.se), a platform for the advancement of molecular biosciences that offers access for researchers in Sweden to cutting-edge infrastructures and state of the art expertise in genomics, proteomics and microscopy.

Subject description
The subject area encompasses population genetics and functional validation of how qualitative and quantitative traits are inherited and expressed in plants.
Duties
The professor is responsible for the development of research and education within the entire subject of plant genetics in collaboration with the faculty's and the university's other researchers and teachers. The candidate should also within the subject area:
• develop and lead externally funded research, which could involve personnel and budget responsibility
• conduct basic research with potential for practical applications on agricultural plants
• develop and lead teaching at basic, advanced and postgraduate level
• maintain existing and develop new national and international networks and collaborations with academia, relevant authorities, industries, organizations and society in general
• contribute to the department's and faculty's administrative tasks and strategic development
• collaborate with other research groups within SLU to strengthen the university's interdisciplinary research
• disseminate research results and other relevant subject information to the surrounding community.
Eligibility
The applicant must meet the following qualification requirements:
• have a PhD and competence as associate professor (docent) or equivalent academic qualifications
• be scientifically skilled within the subject area of this position
• have demonstrated a proven ability to lead and develop an successful research group
• have a proven ability to obtain external research funding in competition
• be pedagogically skilled
• have a proven ability to lead collaborative projects
• have ability to integrate research and scientific perspectives in teaching
• excellent ability to communicate in written and spoken English
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the degree of the scientific expertise required as a qualification for employment.
The assessment of scientific skills will consider
• completed and ongoing research
• ability to independently initiate and lead outstanding research
• ability to obtain external research funding in competition
The assessment of pedagogic skills will consider
• the ability to convey and implement his/her pedagogic vision
• plan, conduct and evaluate teaching and research
• supervise and examinate doctoral students
Furthermore, skills taken into account include
• ability to collaborate with external stakeholders and the surrounding community.
The scientific and pedagogical skills are given equal weights during the assessment of candidates, The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is judged to have the best conditions to carry out and develop current tasks and contribute to a positive development of the subject area.
