Department of Clinical Sciences
The Department of Clinical Sciences is responsible for undergraduate education, research and postgraduate training in the scientific fields of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Care and Animal Science. The department's activities mainly concern our common Swedish domesticated animal species (pets) with a focus on Anaesthesiology, Diagnostic Imaging, Animal Care, Epidemiology, experimental Animal Science, Surgery, Clinical Pathology, Medicine and Animal Reproduction.

Subject Area
Anaesthesiology is the study of anaesthesia and various methods of anaesthesia. The subject covers the main areas of sedation, anaesthesia, analgesia and perioperative intensive care. In the Department of Clinical Sciences, the subject concerns cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horses, dogs, cats and rabbits.
Duties
The holder of the position shall within the subject area:
• develop and lead internationally successful research in the field
• conduct postgraduate training and supervision of doctoral students
• be responsible for the supervision of candidates undergoing international (residents) and national specialist training in the subject
• be responsible for the development of research and training in the subject in collaboration with the other researchers and teachers in the Faculty and the University
• develop, supervise and actively participate in both theoretical and clinical teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels
• carry out clinical work
• collaborate within the department and with other departments at SLU
• collaborate with researchers and other actors outside SLU
• develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, industry, business and society at large
• apply for external research funding from international and national research funders
• disseminate research results and other relevant subject information to the wider community
• contribute to the strategic development of the institution, the faculty and SLU
• carry out administrative tasks and assignments within the department, faculty and university
• be responsible for the staff and budget of the subject
• have Swedish as a working language within 4 years.
Qualifications
The successful applicant shall:
• have a degree in veterinary medicine and a PhD
• have competence as associate professor (docent) or equivalent scientific competence in the subject
• demonstrate research expertise within the subject area
• have documented experience as a principal supervisor at doctoral level
• have documented experience of several years in clinical work in the field of sedation, anaesthesia, analgesia and perioperative intensive care for the above mentioned animal species
• have demonstrated the ability to lead and develop a successful research team
• have proven the ability to obtain external research funding in competition
• have demonstrated teaching expertise and the ability to integrate research and a scientific approach into both teaching and other educational work
• have a very good knowledge of English.
Assessment criteria
The criteria for the appointment of a professor shall be primarily the degree of scientific ability required for eligibility for appointment.
The assessment of research expertise will take the following into account:
• completed research activities and ongoing research in the field of veterinary anaesthesiology
• the ability to independently initiate and carry out outstanding internationally recognised research
• the ability to obtain external research funding on a competitive basis.
The assessment of teaching expertise will take the following into account:
• planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching and training
• supervision of doctoral students and examination
• higher education pedagogical training or equivalent knowledge
• experience in teaching veterinary anaesthesiology, both theoretical and clinical, at undergraduate and postgraduate level
• pedagogical vision.
Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant’s skills in:
• carrying out patient-related clinical work in Veterinary Anaesthesiology as described in the subject description
• developing and managing activities and staff within the academy
• interacting with external stakeholders and the wider community
• communicating research and development work.
When assessing the candidate’s qualifications, equal attention will be given to teaching and research expertise respectively.
The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to be most suitable to carry out and develop the above mentioned duties and to contribute to the positive development of the organization.
