Professor/Associate professor in Chemical Process Engineering

Professor/Associate professor in Chemical Process Engineering

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology is now recruiting a Professor or an Associate professor in Chemical Process Engineering. This position offers the successful candidate close engagement in research, education and innovation in Chemical Process Engineering.

You will join an open and collaborative working environment focused on developing methods and solutions that enable a sustainable and competitive industry in areas where Chemical Engineering are present. You will also be encouraged to explore your own research trajectory in relation to current societal challenges within the Chemical Process Engineering area.

Information about the department
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is one of the largest departments at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The research activities reach from DNA and biomaterials to high temperature corrosion, catalysis and recycling. The department is also heavily committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level in these areas.

The successful candidate will be part of the Division of Chemical Engineering, one of four research divisions at the department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The division includes two units:
* Chemical Reaction and Process Engineering
* Forest Products and Chemical Engineering

We have a wide range of experience in Chemical Engineering area and work both experimentally and with modelling. We have a long tradition of studying both fundamental scientific questions and applied problems together with industry. We collaborate with for example the forest, refinery, pharmaceuticals, food science, chemistry and automotive industries and their equipment manufacturers. We also participate in many international networks with both companies and universities.

The position's field of research
There are many important future challenges in society that require chemical engineering competence. This calls for strong research as well as teaching in this subject. One crucial area is the transition to a bio-economy: to make this happen it will be necessary to develop and design novel processes for the manufacturing of chemicals, materials and fuels from renewable sources. There are also many other important areas for Chemical Engineering research in the future, such as recycling, process intensification, more energy efficient processes, etc. In these different processes there will be a number of different reactors and separation equipment, many of them quite different compared to the present process industry. Consequently, fundamental understanding of unit operations, such as e.g. separation (mixing, distillation, drying, filtration, etc) and mass/heat transfer is of utmost importance in order to design such equipment. This calls for innovative experimentation on the laboratory scale combined with mathematical modelling.

We aim to further strengthen Chalmers' position and visibility within the Chemical Process Engineering area, as well as to continue to forge new alliances and open up new collaborations to address current and forthcoming applications of relevance to society and industry. In this process, there is also a need to maintain a proper balance between fundamental and applied research within the area. Such a continued strategic development of Chemical Process Engineering research at Chalmers has the potential to significantly contribute to the realisation our overall vision for a sustainable future.

Main responsibilities
As a Professor or Associate professor in Chemical Process Engineering, you will attract and lead externally funded research projects related to the Chemical Process Engineering area. One of your major responsibilities will be to lead a research group in Chemical Process Engineering, focusing on unit operations, such as e.g. separation (mixing, distillation, drying, filtration, etc) and mass/heat transfer. The research should be experimental, and could also be combined with modelling.

Over time, you will also contribute to Chalmers' education at all levels by supervising students, teaching and participation in improvement of courses. Furthermore, you are expected to develop an industrial network to utilize the results of your research activities and to enable the identification of coming industrial trends and challenges within the Chemical Process Engineering area.

You will be expected to take part in leadership and administration within the department and/or the university. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.

Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.
