The position is open rank, with possible placement as associate professor or professor. This position offers the successful candidate close engagement with product development research, education, and innovation.

You will join an open and collaborative working environment focused on developing methods and tools that enable a sustainable and digitalized product realization process. You will also be encouraged to explore your own research trajectory in relation to industrial and societal challenges within the product development area.

Information about the department
The Department of Industrial and Materials Science carries out research and education across a full sustainable product and production lifecycle. The research activities include user-centered design, product development, computational mechanics, new materials, manufacturing, and circular production systems. The department is also heavily committed to teaching at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels in these areas. The department employs about 240 people.

You will be part of the Division of Product Development, one of six research divisions at the department. The Division of Product Development delivers research and education with a focus on new methods and tools for digital platform-based development of sustainable and robust products. Projects are often carried out in collaboration with manufacturing and automotive industry.

We have a wide range of experience in product development area and work both with simulations and experiments. The Division has expertise in design methodology, machine elements, mechanical engineering, computer-aided design, simulation, and optimization. The Division conducts research in three research groups: Geometry Assurance & Robust Design, Machine Elements, and Systems Engineering Design. We have a long tradition of solving complex problems together with industry. We collaborate with for example the automotive, aerospace, minerals, and pharmaceuticals industries. We also participate in many international networks with both companies and universities.

The position's field of research
We are looking for a new faculty member with expertise in product development processes, methods, and digitalization. Our vision is that future products will be fully sustainable, and developed through a fully digitalized development process. You will play an important role in contributing to the realization of this vision.

Core research activities of the position include systems engineering, design optimization, and, machine elements modeling, design, and simulation. The research is carried out in close collaboration with Swedish and international industry. Designing for sustainability is a systemic and pervasive challenge in our research while exploration of new data science-driven design methods is a key enabler. You will play an important part in contributing to our existing research, as well as in the development of new areas.

The new faculty member will belong to the Systems Engineering Design group.

Major responsibilities
As a Professor or Associate professor in Product Development, you will play a leading role in research projects aiming to the new and further development of product development processes, methods, and tools, as well as to the introduction and deployment of such methods and tools in industry. A central part of the position will be to develop and maintain an industrial network to utilize the results of your research activities, and to enable the identification of coming industrial trends and challenges related to product development.

Since your own research and that of PhD students is primarily funded by external sources, an important part of the role is to actively apply for external funding.

You will also contribute to Chalmers' education at all levels by supervising students, teaching, and participating in the improvement of courses.

Over time, you will be expected to take part in leadership and administration within the department and/or the university.
