PROFUNDUS AB is looking for an Optical Engineer

Are you a senior and curious professional with experience in classic optics? Would you like to share your expertise in a start-up company on the way to scale up to make a difference for many people around the world? Then we have an exciting opportunity for you.

Profundus has developed a unique dual conjugate, adaptive optics, retinal imaging instrument for high resolution wide-field images of the human retina. The use of adaptive optics enables the research camera to acquire retinal images with a resolution on the order of a few micrometers, approximately 8-10 times better than the 15-20 µm achievable with conventional retinal imaging instruments. This has the potential of becoming a new and indispensable tool for eye researchers and clinics. To continue building Profundus as a company, we are now looking to hire an Optical Engineer to join a team led by one of our founders, to refine and develop our unique product. The company is located at The BioVentureHub at Astra Zeneca in Mölndal. The company has the privilege of having supportive owners and Board members, including GOBIA Enterprises and ALMI Invest, with strong track records of other successful commercial journeys.

To succeed in this role, we believe that you have the following qualifications:

Classic optics knowledge, in particular:

• Ray tracing and aberration evaluation.
• Performance evaluation and optimisation based on both PSF (Point Spread Function) and MTF (Modulation Transfer Function).
• Tolerance analysis.
• Power analysis of illumination optics based on the optical invariance laws (Optical Invariant (Etendue) and Radiance).

Practical experience with:

• Numerical calculations using Zemax (Optics Studio).
• Building an optical system.
• Typical optical measurement devices (e.g. cameras and single point detectors)

Meritorious knowledge:

• Adaptive optics
• Optics mechanics interface
• Straylight analysis
• CAD integration
• Custom lens design

At least one Scandinavian language as well as written and verbal English, is a firm requirement.

We offer

A stimulating and team-based work environment, with a wide range of challenges - where you get time to focus on what you are good at and room to sharpen your skills. We believe in more self-management and less employee evaluations or time reports. We also believe in keeping meetings to a minimum, and giving our people a lot of autonomy. We are well organized with a lean work spirit. As an Optical Engineer on our team, you will have a key position and the possibility to be a part of something great.

About Profundus

Profundus is a start-up company founded to commercialize research and development, at the University of Gothenburg, of a unique method for high-resolution fundus photography based on Dual Conjugate Adaptive Optics. The method is taken from astronomy and generates a series of advantages that mean the possibility of earlier and better diagnosis and follow-up, of diseases and treatments, in the retina of the eye. Our target is to pioneer in a new type of eye diagnostics and contribute to a better quality of life for many people. We want to play a critical role in retinal imaging diagnosis for people around the world. Profundus intends to build a strong company based in Västra Götaland.
