Arbetsbeskrivning

Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/aquatic-sciences) is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The department has about 130 employees. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, as well as on aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. The department is part of a Soil-Water-Environment cluster, a recently established competence centre for landscape-level processes that also includes the Departments of ‘Soil and Environment’ and ‘Energy and Technology’. The breadth of expertise among the 300 members in combination with a well-equipped infrastructure creates a unique platform for high quality research as well as environmental monitoring and assessment.

As project coordinator, you will contribute to developing two projects within the Department's area of activity: (1) establish and develop a national competence center for analyses of algal toxins, (2) coordination support for SciLifeLab's capability in planetary biology https://www.scilifelab.se/capabilities/planetary-biology/

In the first part of the project, you will have a coordinating role with focus on laboratory practice. This involves developing, performing and evaluating analyses of algal toxins based on existing knowledge as well as in cooperation and dialogue with key actors in the field. The approach is mainly based on affinity-based methods (ELISA) and mass spectrometry in combination with liquid chromatography (LC-MS). You will also coordinate and organize the collection of sample material. In the second sub-project, you will assist the capability's scientific leaders with planning and implementation of network activities (conferences, research meetings, courses, outreach). For both sub-projects, tasks related to coordination of project reporting and internal and external communication is also anticipated.

Qualifications:
For this position, a PhD or equivalent with a focus on biochemistry, aquatic ecology, environmental science or a related subject area within the life sciences is required. Applicants must also have at least a basic understanding of modern analytical methods for toxins and biodiversity. Practical experience in planning, coordinating and carrying out larger field studies and laboratory experiments are considered as merits. Practical experience of LC-MS and molecular biology work are also considered as merits.
