Project employee SKA Digitizer Delivery Technical Support

Project employee SKA Digitizer Delivery Technical Support

Arbetsbeskrivning

A temporary, part-time, project position is offered supporting the delivery of state-of-the-art digital sampling technology to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) mid-frequency radio telescope array located in South Africa. The SKA is one of the most technically challenging projects in modern science and the high capacity digital sampling technology needed to capture vast amounts of data is a critical component which lies at the very heart of the SKA telescope design. The position is offered at Senior Research Engineer level as part Onsala Space Observatory's Technical Support Group located at Råö, 45 km South of Gothenburg. Sweden.

Information about the division/the project
The Space, Earth and Environment (SEE) department at Chalmers hosts in total 80 staff members involved in astrophysics research, developing radio/mm astronomy instrumentation/data processing techniques,and in operating the radio telescopes at Onsala Space Observatory. SEE's astronomy related activities are carried out in two of its Divisions; namely the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) Division hosting Sweden's national infrastructure for radio astronomy and the Astronomy and Plasma Physics Division. The former Division executes research and development on instrumentation for radio and millimetre wave astronomy.

Job description
The goals of this temporary project position (60% of full time position from 1st February- 31st December 2023) are;
(1) To provide technical support to Swedish industry partners delivering Digitizers to the SKA1-mid telescope, this involves aiding in the identification and solution of technical problems that arise during initial production. This role also involves acting as a bridge between Swedish industry and the SKA Observatory.
(2) Discussing with industry partners possibilities for improved digitizer designs that may form the basis of future digitizer delivery projects from Sweden to the SKA.
(3) Prototyping of digital sampling technology approaches at OSO relevant to future projects in radio astronomy, including for the SKA.

Contract terms
Temporary employment.

Qualifications
A Masters degree in Digital Electronics is a minimum requirement for this position; having taken specialized courses in digital sampling technology is an advantage. Experience in applying digital electronics for real-time processing of wide bandwidth sensor data is a key requirement. Extensive experience in working with digital sampling technology applied to radio astronomy applications (preferably for greater than 5 years) is a major advantage. High proficiency in spoken and written English is a requirement. Experience with project management and supervision of project subcontractors is a requirement.
