PYP 5 Homeroom teacher
International School of Karlskrona caters to international families in Karlskrona and offers both the PYP (Primary Years Program: Authorized) and MYP (Middle Years Program: Candidate) as well as Fritids (after and before school care). The language of instruction is English which means that all classes, except Swedish, are taught in English. We pride ourselves to have a diverse set of students and teachers. This academic year, 2023-2024, is our fifth year of operation. While we are still a small school, classes are steadily growing.
Description of Position:
We are now seeking a professional and passionate IB, PYP Homeroom Teacher who wishes to be a key component of the continued development and growth of our school. The successful candidate is a licensed educator in his/her home country.
In the role of a PYP teacher, you will be responsible for providing high quality, transdisciplinary education, teaching mainly Unit of Inquiry (primarily Social studies and Science), Language, and Mathematics. A successful candidate has a history of ensuring a learning environment in which the students have the agency to drive their own learning.
The applicant should have a desire to work within an IB environment and a thorough understanding of inquiry-based pedagogy, how to teach for conceptual understanding, as well as how to develop essential skills (ATL skills). Experience in inclusion and differentiated instruction in a multicultural setting is desirable. Collaboration is key in our environment. Thus, the ideal candidate must want to and like to work in a team.
Responsibilities include:
• Collaborate with other teachers to ensure a transdisciplinary and holistic approach to teaching and learning
• Create and implement lesson plans that develop abilities, knowledge, and skills for primary aged students
• Develop and utilize varied formative and summative assessments to monitor progress, evaluate students’ understanding, and inform teaching learning practices
• Ensure a positive, safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment in which the students’ well-being is at the center of your attention and learning engagements are designed to meet the needs of all students, learner variability is celebrated, and students feel included and valued. This includes recognizing the students' needs and adapting the approach according to individual and group needs.
• Support student voice and choice and enable the students have the agency to drive their own learning
• Ensure the learning environment (consisting of space, time, materials, and people) is planned, organized, and effectively managed to develop appropriate and positive behavior patterns
• A commitment to empower each learner to fulfill his or her maximum potential by developing skills, understandings, and academic abilities
• Being professional in your conduct towards students, colleagues, parents and other stakeholders
• A commitment to instill a love for learning in each learner
• A commitment to life-long learning for self through participating in professional development and school development
• Teach with a transdisciplinary approach, authentically connecting teaching and learning engagements across subject disciplines and to “real life”
• Demonstrate a constructivist approach to pedagogy, including inquiry-based teaching and learning as well as teaching for conceptual understanding
• Stay abreast with professional development by keeping up-to-date with the latest research and trends in physical education and in IB pedagogyParticipates in mandatory IB training
The desired candidate is/has:
• IB PYP experience is ideal. However, life-long learners role-modeling a willingness to continuously learn and develop is more essential
• Must have a teaching degree and/or teaching license that is valid in the country where it was achieved
• Is open-minded and a proactive team player embracing change and development in a new and growing IB school
• Is international-minded and demonstrates a desire to develop global citizenship in all learners
• Demonstrates excellent and fluent, verbal and written, English communication skills
• Is community minded and embraces the idea of including the whole school community consisting of parents, students and all staff to ensure a holistic educational experience
• Demonstrates a desire to develop agentic students able to drive their own, purposeful, learning leading to meaningful action
• In the interest of visa and work permit processing time, is either an EU citizen or already fulfills legal requirements to work and live in Sweden (native Swede or non-native with a current work permit). This requirement is out of the school’s control
• Role-models all IB, Learner Profile attributes, such as being Caring, Open-minded, Inquirer, Reflective, Principled, a Communicator, and more.
Position
IB, PYP 5 Homeroom Teacher approximately 85% and approximately 15% PYP 1-2 Swedish language acquisition teacher, at an IB, PYP authorized International School or Karlskrona
Duration: Likely January 10, 2024 until January 17, 2025.
