ESS is looking for a Radiation Physics Engineer/Radiation Protection Expert within the Environment, Health, Safety & Quality (ESH&Q) .

About the group
The tasks and responsibilities of the radiation protection group include but are not limited to supporting the organisation in radiation protection services and as experts within radiation protection with knowledge in radiation physics and radiological and environmental control. By:


• Establishing operational plans for new installations and the acceptance into service of new or modified radiation sources in relation to any engineering controls, design features, safety features and warning devices relevant to radiation protection
• Advise and supporting the radiation protection services, the ESS management and staff in your area of expertise
• Providing high-level specialist advice on radiation protection to radiation protection services, the ESS management and staff using sources of ionising radiation.
• Providing comprehensive, professional and independent advice to the ESS with respect to the required (legal and operational) protection measures to restrict exposure to ionising radiation.
• Assessing of radiological consequences for the general public and the environment for planned operations as well as for incidents or accidents.
• Contribution to document management in areas of radiation protection.

About the role
As the successful candidate and future Radiation Protection Engineer you will be:


• the Subject Matter Expert in the areas of radiation safety systems incl. shielding, radiation physics and neutronics.
• a member of the Radiation Safety Committee at ESS.
• one of the Lead Editor of the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) and contribute to the licensing work by conducting review of analyses, writing text to the PSAR and conducting self-assessment of how ESS fulfils the legal conditions.
• managing rules and guidelines regarding radiation safety.
• reviewing documents on radiation shielding for safety, accident analysis calculations, activation calculations and other topics related to radiation physics.
• managing the ESS accident dose assessment model.
• supporting the Radiation Protection Expert Function in radiation safety systems incl. shielding, radiation physics and neutronics.
• acting as contact person in radiation protection matters at ESS, in particular for the target station, the active cells facility and the radioactive waste treatment facility
• excellent in communication with proven ability to be have a solution-driven and proactive mindset in a fast-developing environment.
• be available for on-call duties.

About you
We believe that you have: 


• Master’s degree in nuclear/radiation physics or equivalent
• Solid and practical knowledge in radiation protection, in particular Swedish and European radiation protection regulations and standards relevant for radiation safety and radiation protection
• Solid and practical knowledge in nuclear physics with a minimum three years of experience of practical radiation protection at a similar research facility ( e.g. accelerator driven facility)
• Knowledge in radioactive waste and decommissioning would be beneficial
• Previous experience in written documentation for license applications to authorities
• Previous experience in shielding design (selection of shielding material and performing shielding calculations)
• Dose calculations for workers exposure and towards the public and environment
• Fluency in English, willing to learn Swedish
• Good communication skills and the ability to give information, instructions, lectures, and education to the Radiation Protection group and ESS staff
• A w.ell-developed ability to work independently but also in a team, you listen, consult others and you communicate proactively with a high level of integrity.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probation period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
