ESS is looking for a Radiation Physics Engineer/Radiation Protection Expert, in the Radiation Protection (RP) group organised within the Environment, Health, Safety & Quality (ESH&Q) directorate.

About the group
The tasks and responsibilities of the radiation protection group include but are not limited to supporting the ESS organisation as experts within Radiation Protection for radiation physics and radiological and environmental control. This is accomplished by:


• Optimisation of radiation protection and application of dose restrictions.
• Advise and supporting the radiation protection services, the ESS management and staff in your area of expertise
• Providing comprehensive, professional and independent advice to the ESS with respect to the required (legal and operational) protection measures to restrict exposure to ionising radiation.
• Assessment of doses for workers and environment during normal operation as well as for most likely events.
• Contribution to document management in areas of operational radiation protection, e.g. radiological and environmental monitoring, radiological risk analysis, personnel dosimetry, radiation passbooks, radiation work permits, clearance procedures etc.
• Ensuring the implementation of a safety culture in regards to radiation protection matters at ESS.

About the role
As the successful candidate and future Radiation Protection Engineer you will:


• support the set up and management of the radioanalytical laboratory and the dosimetry service for operational radiation protection.
• coordinate the operational radiation protection team, develop and implement radiation protection procedures and coordinate and give advice in operational day to day tasks.
• plan and set up the tracking system for radioactive material including internal transport of radioactive material, acceptance and shipping of activated material and samples with the operational radiation protection team.
• participate in reviews of radiological risk analysis, assessment of operational radiation protection measures, radwork permits and dosimetry.
• develop and manage training for the operational radiation protection team and ESS staff.
• support with documentation for the radiation protection management system.
• support the Radiation Protection Expert Function in operational radiation protection and in environmental and radiological monitoring.
• act as contact person in radiation protection matters at ESS, in particular for the ESS neutron science and the experimental beamlines of the ESS facility.
• be available for on call duties.

About you
We believe that you have: 


• Master’s degree in radiation physics or equivalent
• Solid and practical knowledge in operational radiation protection, in particular Swedish and European radiation protection regulations and standards relevant for radiation safety and radiation protection
• Solid and practical knowledge in radiation physics with a minimum of three years of experience of practical radiation protection at a similar facility ( e.g. accelerator driven facility)
• Documented experience from leading projects and/or collaborations between different stakeholders, preferably in relation to operational radiation protection and/or the setup and maintenance of a radioanalytical laboratory
• Previous experience in shielding and dose calculations for operations and as part of emergency preparedness
• Fluency in English, willing to learn Swedish
• Good communication skills and the proven ability to be have a solution-oriented and proactive approach in a fast-developing environment
• Provide information and education to the Radiation Protection group and ESS staff
• A well-developed ability to work independently but also in a team, you listen, consult others and communicate proactively with a high level of integrity.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probation period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
