The Environment, Safety & Health Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Radiation Protection Officer (RPO).

Description of directorate/division
The Environment, Safety & Health Division, reporting to the associate Director of Operations, ESH and Quality is responsible for activities connected to safety (radiology, dosimetry, occupational safety, fire protection, emissions) of the personnel as well as the public. 

Description of main responsibilities
The position as RPO means to be the person who has operational responsibility at ESS for radiation safety protection in accordance with the Swedish regulations issued by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) as well as the specific conditions given by SSM for ESS. This is a new position and you will work together with our Senior Radiation Protection Expert on developments related to radiation protection that should be in place for the commissioning and operation of ESS.

The position includes the following task and responsibilities:


• To act as a RPO during the construction period;
• To take responsibility for practical radiation protection in the test stands and during commissioning of the accelerator.
• To participate in building up the required Quality Assurance policies and procedures for radiation protection, including training, calibration, type testing etc.
• To participate in the implementation of a healthy safety culture in the area of radiation protection at ESS.
• To participate in building up the future Radiation Protection group at ESS.

Qualifications
You have a well-developed ability to listen, consult others and to communicate proactively with a high level of integrity. Building wide and effective networks of contacts both inside and outside the organization comes naturally to you. We believe that you have senior expertise and operational experience of handling radiological protection issues for a large-scale scientific facility, preferably an accelerator driven one. Furthermore you have documented radiation safety education on at least a Bachelor of Science/Engineering level.

Your English skills need to be good in both verbal and written form, and a basic knowledge of Swedish would be valuable since reporting to SSM will most likely be in Swedish. Experience of working in an international collaborative environment would also be of value.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period, the position is to be filled as soon as possible. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
