You will be part of The Mechatronics Group at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås. In the role as corporate research unit we ensure ABB?s technology competitiveness now and in future. We monitor, identify and develop the latest technologies in close collaboration with our business units, ABB's customers and leading universities worldwide.
Robot manipulators, contactors, breaker drives, mine hoists, gearboxes, couplings and service devices are all examples of mechanical systems in the ABB product portfolio. There are also mechanical systems that ABB does not manufacture but needs to understand in detail in order to sell our products/systems (e.g. wind turbines, cranes, fans and pumps, steel and paper mills, etc.). In addition, expertise in mechanics is required for design of electrical products such as transformers and motors.
The focus of the Mechatronics Group is optimal machine design, by which we mean the mechanical aspects of the design as well as integration of different technologies into a working solution. Our mission is to safeguard that the mechanical systems that are relevant for ABB?s business are competitive and developed using state-of-the-art methods and tools regarding analysis, design, manufacturing, usage, and maintenance. Core competencies in the group are mechanics & dynamics, design methodology & optimization, machine elements. System design also require knowledge in motion control, actuators and electronics.
We have in-house access to prototyping tools such as 3D-printer, lab facilities for testing as well as a modern computational cluster capable of demanding simulations.
Your principal role in this position will be to conduct research and development in the area of design optimization. You should have competence in mechanics and/or dynamics and optimization methods. Alternatively, you have competence in design methodology using statistical methods for load characterization and engineering materials fatigue properties. You should strive to become an authority within your area and as such it is also part of your role to monitor the state-of-the-art methodology and technology in both academia and industry and promote the use of such methodology and technology within ABB global organization.
You have a technical Ph.D in relevant area, or a master's degree together with a few years' successful experience.
To succeed in this position, you should be capable to work both independently and in a team, and to establish collaborations both ABB internally and externally with leading research organizations and universities.
You will be working in an international environment. It is therefore required that you have good communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
