Arbetsbeskrivning

R&D Engineers within Cables and HVDC at Offshore Power Technology, Vattenfall R&D
Do you want to be part of the journey towards fossil free living within one generation? Vattenfall is at the forefront of driving the transformation of the energy landscape towards more renewables and with sustainability in absolute focus. Do you want to be a force in taking Vattenfall forward in this direction enabling our grids to make room for new active customers, fossil-free living, and include higher amounts of weather-dependent power production?

Are you looking for a diverse international working place characterized by team spirit, flexibility and an open atmosphere?
If yes: we have a great opportunity for you!

As an R&D Engineer we need you to strengthen our Power Technology Section by working to develop and use new technology in connection to wind power and more efficient use of power system components. You will be a member of the Offshore Power Technology team, which examines different HVAC and HVDC interconnections, performs cable studies, and provides technology expertise in both transmission and cable systems. By working on these topics, we expect you to improve your already good understanding of new grid components and grid codes. The competence is crucial for Vattenfall in many areas, such as several upcoming new large wind power plants, connection of different synchronous power systems, electrification of large industries, as well as new grid solutions for a future of more flexibility and weather-dependent fluctuations in the grids.
Vattenfall R&D is responsible for conducting business driven technical development that creates value for the company and helps realizing our strategy. We work in agile teams close to the business of Vattenfall. The corporate R&D unit employs 120 people located in three different offices in Sweden and Denmark. The section Power Technology works with power system analysis needed to understand bottlenecks and dynamic behaviors in the electrical grid as well as optimization and control of the power system including both its loads and productions.
At Vattenfall R&D we go from ideas to real projects in short time. We know that our employees change the future of Vattenfall and their ideas are extremely important.

What we offer
We offer you a flexible and warm work environment, a diverse group in age, gender, and nationalities where everyone is on an equal footing, a team of considerable freedom to shape your own day-to-day activities and the opportunity to work in an exciting and changing technical field of strategic importance to the company. At Vattenfall we put high priority to enable a good balance between work and private life.

Your responsibilities as R&D Engineer
In this R&D Engineer role, you will have the opportunity to be a part of the Power Technology Section that delivers major and often challenging assignments together with other R&D Engineers from other teams, experts from Vattenfall, and consultants. You will conduct power system studies using different software depending on if you study bottlenecks, short-circuit levels, voltage stability, frequency stability, or very fast transients. Moreover, the position leads your own customer focused projects including communicating and developing customer relationships with Business Area Wind.
The competence needed is an Electrical Engineer with a power system profile. The competence is very important in the coming years for Vatten¬fall, due to the great need to support Business Area Wind with analysis and research around subjects such as: power system analysis, stability and control, margins in components, and reducing cost for maintenance.

Your qualifications and personal skills as R&D Engineer within offshore power technology
We see that the successful candidate:
Holds a Master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Power Technology or similar.
Have five years of experience in offshore power systems areas.
Have strong command in simulation tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD, DigSilent Power Factory, Python and/or Matlab.
Since you will work in an international, diverse environment, fluency in English is a must, while a good command of Swedish, Danish or German is not a requirement but will be considered as a merit.

To be able to work in this role, we believe that you must have experience that fits either of following profiles:
Cables technology including material science, electromagnetic properties, and physics , CPS and J-Tubes, cables monitoring systems, FEM thermal and electromagnetic modeling via COMSOL, and cables testing practices.
HVDC and FACTS technology modeling including LLC and VSC system control, and EMT studies such as energization, switching and TRV via PSCAD.

On the personal level, you are analytical, committed and self-driven with good communication and interpersonal skills. You are capable of leading teams and able to communicate clearly at all levels. You are able to develop rough ideas and ambitions into concrete and successful projects. As the work involves extensive interaction both internally and with external partners and suppliers, a good understanding of commercial aspects and an ability to establish and maintain relationships and networks is key. A passion for new technology we believe is a necessity for this role.
