Arbetsbeskrivning
Take your next career step at ABB with a global team that is energizing the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future. At ABB, we have the clear goal of driving diversity and inclusion across all dimensions: gender, LGBTQ+, abilities, ethnicity and generations. Together, we are embarking on a journey where each and every one of us, individually and collectively, welcomes and celebrates individual differences.
As an R&D Scientist, you will help steer the direction of strategic corporate technology by focusing on solving industrial problems through reliable research work. Working as a researcher in R&D projects, you will solve applied research and technology problems and develop ways to more effectively solve them. In our highly skilled, experienced, and multi-disciplinary team, we work within the product segments of motors, switchgears and energy storage systems (batteries, fuel cells, supercaps etc.).
Our R&D areas include novel materials, advanced manufacturing solutions and energy storage devices, with the goal to develop sustainable concepts and also enable a circular economy. Reporting to the Research Team Manager, you will perform advanced multi-physics simulations and conduct mechanics and thermal analysis, while challenging conventional systems and ideas, and contributing to scientific discussions and creating customer value in your area of research.
Your responsibilities
Perform advanced simulations using finite element analysis and fluid dynamics tools based on 2D/3D CAD models.
Perform thermal, fluid dynamics and structural mechanics simulations of electrical equipment and related systems, e.g., electric motors, energy storage systems etc.
Challenge conventional systems/ideas and introduce new product design concepts considering novel materials and advanced manufacturing methods, as suitable for the application and promoting sustainability and circularity.
Perform experimental investigations and prototype tests to validate simulation results.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external academic/industrial partners and generate innovative ideas and solutions.
Generate intellectual property and document project results by writing/delivering quality technical reports.
Your background
Preferably a PhD degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgy, Thermal engineering or Applied Physics with > 2 years of experience OR Master’s degree with > 5 years of relevant experience.
Solid knowledge of mechanics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer and fluid dynamics with the willingness to continue learning new skills/knowledge and develop further.
Hands-on experience with thermal analysis, structural mechanics analysis and CFD (steady state/transient, laminar/turbulent flow, natural/mixed/forced convection), using commercially available tools.
Experience in CAD (e.g. SolidWorks) and in performing solid and surface modeling, together with the ability to simulate large assemblies.
Experience or exposure in designing lab set-ups and performing experiments is a plus.
Background/knowledge of metallurgy and generic material technology together with their manufacturing methods is an advantage.
Skilled in communicating in English (discussion, presentation, and reporting).
As a person you have a strong team spirit, is ready to take own initiatives and deliver high quality results with speed and within the stipulated deadlines.
Good collaboration capabilities in a technical team and laboratory environment.
