The Department of Soil and Environment is looking for a Research assistant at Department Soil and Environment (Agricultural Water management). The department conducts research, environmental analysis and education in soil science and sustainable land use. The majority of the department's activities and employees are located in the Soil-Water-Environment building on the SLU Ultuna campus in Uppsala, and there is a research group with a field research station situated in Skara.
Duties:
The applicant will work under close supervision and guidance to accomplish tasks.
• Produce an assessment using remote sensing to identify water retention structures trends and developments in designated Swedish landscapes
• Support preparations of soil samples in Soil physical lab under guidance
• Support Environmental monitoring control and data collection scheme (as needed ) under supervision
The position will be based at SLU, Department of Soil and Environment and support the topic of “Agricultural Water Management”.
Qualifications:
We are seeking a flexible candidate willing to contribute to various research and practical work in our research team.. The candidate should be recent graduate and familiar with both practical and theoretical aspects of soil, plant and water in agricultural research and practise.
Required education and experience
Applicants should have an MSc in Soil and Environment. The candidate will have proven interests and record of accomplishment on preparing catchment modelling input data related to soil, crop and water. The candidate must display an in-depth understanding of soil science linked to agro-hydrological conditions of farming systems and landscapes.
Desired skills and experience
The candidate should ideally have some practical experience from field or lab work related to soil and/or water sampling and analyses. It is an advantage to have experience in developing or contributing to scientific tasks such as developing proposals and /or scientific writing and presentation.
Basic skills of programming (R, Matlab, or similar) applied to data analysis , numerical modelling, RS-GIS, statistical evaluation when applied to soil-water-vegetation in agricultural landscapes is an advantage.
Basic understanding of written and spoken Swedish is a merit.
Valid driver’s license is a merit.
