The position is within Cardiovascular research centre (CVRC) at Örebro University, which is one of the strong research environments and performs high quality research in the field of cardiovascular disease. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common manifestation of atherosclerosis, affecting arteries in the leg, and is highly prevalent in the elderly population. Increasing evidence suggests that gut microbiota and gut microbe-derived dietary metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) from certain diet is associated with the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in cardiovascular disease, however their role in pathogenesis of peripheral arterial disease is unknown. Despite its high prevalence (20% in over 60 year of age in Sweden), PAD remains poorly diagnosed and receives less attention in scientific literature compared to coronary artery disease. With support from the Knowledge Foundation, Örebro University together with business community is investing in a clinical research study aimed to investigate gut microbiota and gut microbe-derived dietary metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide in modulating inflammation in peripheral arterial disease.
