Research Assistant in Communication Science

Research Assistant in Communication Science

Arbetsbeskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 49 000 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinarberget in Gothenburg and Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The current position is placed at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station and in Gothenburg.

Project description

The project will be done in close collaboration with SUREAQUA, a Nordic Centre of Excellence with more than 40 partners across the Nordic region. SUREAQUA aims at developing knowledge and solutions for sustainable and resilience aquatic production as part of the bioeconomy.

Successfully addressing sustainable and resilient aquatic production strongly relates to our ability to communicate complex science to a range of stakeholders from the public to decision makers. Traditionally, this process is linear (the science supply paradigm) with scientists providing information that is believed to be useful for stakeholders. However, research demonstrates that this kind of information is a weak policy instrument.

The Research Assistant will develop, implement and evaluate a framework across social, natural and communication sciences to optimize communication of scientific information developed within SUREAQUA. Different methods targeting stakeholder’s values will be tested and compared.

Job assignments

This cross-disciplinary project will require skills in working across scientific disciplines (natural and social sciences). Techniques used within the project include literature review, collection of information through regular interactions with SUREAQUA scientists and stakeholders (e.g. aquaculture companies), basic laboratory experiments and development of communication activities. Implementation of the communication activities will require field work and may also require work in different countries within the SUREAQUA network.

The employment

This is a fixed-term employment for 12 months, 100%, starting as soon as possible or upon agreement.

Eligibility

Eligible to be employed as an assistant researcher is a person with a university degree on a basic or advanced level in Biology (with emphasis on Sustainability)

Assessments

We are seeking a highly motivated person with a strong general background in natural science. As the project is highly cross-disciplinary and focusses on communication, interest and experience working across discipline is crucial for the employment. Previous experience working on the development, implementation and test of communication activities is advantageous.

Excellent communication skills, written and spoken, in English are necessary since we work in an international environment.

The application should preferably be written in English and must include:

• A short cover letter with the applicant’s justification for the application, i.e., that describes how the applicant meets the selection criteria
• A list of qualifications (CV)
• Copy of certificate of exam

The top ranked candidates will be selected for an interview, which might be held in English and could also be performed by phone/Zoom.
