Research engineer, VERITAS

Arbetsbeskrivning

MAX IV Laboratory has operated successfully for more than 25 years and is currently building the new MAX IV synchrotron facility in Lund.
More than 1000 scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world are coming to the MAX IV Laboratory every year to use the x-rays produced by our electron accelerators. They do research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology. 180 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory. MAX IV is the largest and most ambitious Swedish investment in national research infrastructure. It will be the brightest source of x-rays worldwide when inaugurated 2016 and will replace the existing laboratory, which today consists of the storage ring MAX I, II and III. MAX IV Laboratory is hosted by Lund University.

Tasks

Currently 13 beamlines are funded and under construction at the MAX IV laboratory.

In order to strengthen the team working with one of these - the soft X-ray VERITAS beamline for RIXS – Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering - we are now seeking to hire a research engineer with a background and interest in soft X-ray synchrotron radiation based techniques and instrumentation.

The VERITAS beamline is currently under design and early stages of construction. The beamline is planned to be installed and commissioned during 2015 and early 2016 and is expected to open for outside users in late 2016 at the 3 GeV storage ring of the MAX IV facility.

In the design and construction phase you, as research engineer at VERITAS, participate in the design, installation and commission of the beamline and its endstations in collaboration with the staff at the beamline within the established organization for beamline buildup at MAX IV Laboratory.

In the operations phase you share responsibility for operation and user support, maintenance, and further development of the beamline with the teams of scientists and engineers that will be built up around the VERITAS and other beamlines. The user support involves contact with the users before their experiments in order to make sure that all necessary technical preparations and other prerequisites are in place for the experiments. During their experiments at MAX IV, you will support and guide the users. Together with our users and you colleagues at MAX IV you will thus facilitate world leading research at the world’s most brilliant light source.

Qualifications:

We see that you have a university degree in natural sciences or engineering subjects of relevance for soft X-ray beamlines and that you have a solid background in the techniques and technologies relevant for the beamline and the research planned for it.

Demonstrated experience in the construction, including also the planning, running, and maintenance stages, of complex scientific equipment is a merit. Demonstrated practical experience of developing, assembling, running, and maintaining equipment for X-ray emission spectroscopy under ultrahigh vacuum and near-ambient conditions inclusive sample environments, gas handling systems, and spectrometers relevant for X-ray emission spectroscopy is considered a merit. Demonstrated experience with ultrahigh vacuum technologies, associated sample environments and good knowledge of general soft X-ray instrumentation and spectroscopies are considered further merits.

You have demonstrated experience with support of user groups at a synchrotron radiation facility (or similar user-facility). You have excellent command of English, very good communication skills, and good team working skills including also ability to work independently and plan your own time.
