Research Engineer/Instrument Scientist at SPECIES beamline

Research Engineer/Instrument Scientist at SPECIES beamline

Arbetsbeskrivning

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

The Science division is divided into a number of supporting groups and three scientifically oriented groups, Imaging, Diffraction and Scattering, and Spectroscopy.

These groups are further divided into teams based on beamline or scientific technique. Each team has the task to develop and support the instrumentation and scientific activity at the different beamlines. The aim is to maintain and develop state of the art equipment at stable operation.

We are looking for a Research Engineer / Instrument Scientist to work as a part of the ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) team with primary location at the SPECIES beamline, a beamline which offers end stations for APXPS and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. The APXPS branch of SPECIES began user operations in autumn 2019 and currently offers a variety of sample environments for performing APXPS experiments e.g. within the catalysis and atomic layer deposition domains. The APXPS staff at SPECIES forms the APXPS teams of MAX IV together with the staff at the HIPPIE beamline. Currently, the time has nine members, who work together on the support and development of the APXPS programme at MAX IV. Both beamlines provide a wide range of sample environments for in situ and operando XPS measurements – catalysis, electrochemistry, thin film growth, solid-liquid interfaces, liquid jets, and sulphur chemistry.

Tasks
The work tasks of the research engineer include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Active participation in the support and maintenance of the beamline and the end station in collaboration with the entire beamline and APXPS team.
- Active participation in the development of existing and new functionalities of the beamline and the end station in collaboration with the entire beamline and the APXPS team.
- Interaction with and support of user groups
- Development of her/his own R&D or scientific project within the possibilities and capabilities of the beamline, the APXPS team, and collaboration with user groups.

The person will be encouraged to take part in scientific projects run at both SPECIES or HIPPIE beamlines by either APXPS team or users.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must

- Hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline.
- Provide documented experience of performing and interpreting synchrotron based APXPS experiments.
- Provide documented experience of working with ultrahigh vacuum instrumentation and scientific instrumentation at the synchrotrons. Experience with developing sample environments for APXPS will be highly valued.
- Experience in user support at the synchrotrons is considered as an advantage.
- Software development skills are considered as an advantage; especially experience with Sardana and Python.
- Experience in design and simulation software (Solidworks, Comsol, etc.) is considered an advantage

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the ability work in a team, good communication skills and good command of the English.

Probationary period may apply.

On call services may apply in the future.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset. We kindly decline all sales and marketing contacts.
