Research position in mathematics for AI: Equivariant neural networks

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the research and the division
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees, and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas is cunducted.  We are located in a modern building at the center of the Chalmers campus. Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.

At the division of Algebra and Geometry we conduct research in areas such as algebraic and complex geometry, various aspects of number theory, algebra and representation theory, complex analysis, mathematical physics, and mathematics of AI.

This is an 11-month research position in mathematics for AI. We are looking for a person with a strong background in deep learning, both from a mathematical perspective as well as a more applied experience. You should also have a strong background in mathematics, in particular (differential) geometry and group theory. It is also meritorious if you have previous experience with quantum field theories, like non-abelian gauge theories.

The purpose of the project is to build the mathematical foundations of equivariant transformer architectures, and apply these to autonomous driving.

Major responsibilities
You will work in the research area of geometric deep learning at the Division of algebra and geometry. You are expected to contribute by developing new ideas both independently and in collaborations. You should be highly motivated and independent. Your ability to collaborate and communicate will be taken into account in the assessment.

Teaching, possibly including supervision of students’ independent work, may be part of your duties up to an extent of 20 %. Our teaching languages are English and Swedish. As most of our teaching is in Swedish, the options will vary according to your language skills. Chalmers University of Technology offers courses in the Swedish language.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment for 11 months.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you should have completed a Ph.D. degree in mathematics or equivalent, by the application deadline. Professional working proficiency in English. Strong background in mathematics, and previous experience in programming with Python, in particular training and evaluating deep neural networks using PyTorch or TensorFlow is mandatory.

Expertise in group theory and differential geometry, as well as gauge theories in theoretical physics is meritorious, as well as previous industrial experience, in particular with high performance compute (HPC) and distributed systems.

The assessment of your application will be based mainly on your scientific skills. You are expected to provide evidence of excellence in research.  The applications will be assessed by a local recruitment committee at the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
